The more populated counties like McCracken, Henderson, Daviess, Marshall, and Hopkins are even Fulton counties are starting to get their power back on.
Still Graves, Livingston, Crittenden, Carlisle, Hickman, Lyon, and Caldwell counties are either mostly or entirely without power. Many areas have ran out of water, and they have to rely on creeks and waterways just like the first western Kentuckians had to do to drink and bathe properly. I wish I can say when the power will come on, but it some areas it will take a few days and the it may take till early to mid March for the last people to get power on.
The National Guard is helping out people as they are deployed here. Some generators for nursing homes, and hospitals are available for FEMA even though it isn't near enough but that is for another rant and another different blog for that.
Shelters are open but some rural counties may need to evacuate to Nashville, Clarksville, or even in Hopkinsville or Bowling Green Kentucky. For areas like Livingston and Lyon counties once Paducah and Murray start coming on a little more you can seek shelter more in those areas.

...FALLING ICE DUE TO MELTING IS CAUSING A POTENTIALLY HAZARDOUS
SITUATION...
TEMPERATURES WARMING TO JUST ABOVE FREEZING AND LIMITED SUNSHINE
AT TIMES IS CAUSING ICE THAT HAS ACCUMULATED ON BUILDINGS...POWER
LINES...AND TREES TO START TO MELT. AS A RESULT...LARGE PIECES OF
ICE ARE FALLING TO THE GROUND. THE MELTING AND FALLING OF ICE CAN
ALSO CAUSE TREES AND POWER LINES TO SPRING BACK QUICKLY.
TEMPERATURES ARE EXPECTED TO FALL BACK BELOW FREEZING

thawing in west ky if not today tommorow.
today and tomorrow you get to see the real damage of this storm. The 1/2 inch to sometimes 2 inches of ice melts off the trees. Except a lot of damage to forestry across west kentucky and a lot of tress down. There may even be a slight spike in power outages as loose limbs thaw out and fall onto the powerlines. By sun/sun night a good deal of falldown should end.
anyone now can comment
Due to the great ice storm I changed my settings. You dont have to have a Google account to comment you can send an comment. Anyone can send a comment if they want to from now on I know several people want updates on this situation
More updates from the storm.
Many shelters in the Livingston/Crittenden County areas have opened up. The worst is occurring and still there is no power to these areas, and water is really starting to run out. So much that a 2 gallon per person water restriction is in effect for these areas. Evacuation may have to be neccasary to areas like TN or any family from outside of West Kentucky.
Also the Princeton area was reported by some of my friends to look like a tornado went though because the ice damage was so bad.

Jan 30th overview.
Recovery from a severe and in many places in West KY an historic Ice Storm is still occurring and still will occur. Power in some areas may be out for more than 20 days and with areas running out of water and no power a real crisis is occurring. So lets all pray for most of the West KY families out there. Also there is a chance of snow for most of West KY whether West KY gets any of the heavy snow or if it all stays in N AL, TN, and N GA remains a mystery.
Preparing for FALLDOWN this weekend.
Oh Ok I will try to find more reports. It will be if you are from New England something called "FALLDOWN" will occur this weekend. That means all the limbs which are still frozen and haven't really melted at all will thaw out and fall to the ground for Sat and Sun. that could at least briefly knock out more power and cause hazards. Other bad news is we are watching to see if West KY will get effected by what might be a decent snow event Mon/Tues. So much going on storm reports and in the future.

More updates out there
I have not heard a lot from out in worst areas of West Kentucky. Here is what I heard. Thanks to all the people who posted comments on my blogs and giving me news. There have been 3 deaths and over 400,000 customers in KY without power. Multiply it by 3 or 4 to get the number of how many people are in the dark.
In Livingston County US 60 has trees branches down, and therefore is closed till further noticed. Burna and areas in Livingston County have been without power and water since yesterday.
In Paducah the NWS is disabled. Service backup is being provided in the NWS by surrounding offices. Most of the area is without power and it may take days or even weeks.
In Murray classes are canceled till Monday. I heard that there was damage to Murray State Campus. And power is out probably for awhile.
In Hopkins County Dawson Springs a town of 2,500 is all without power for 2 to 3 weeks. A town of Crofton across the Hopkins/Christian county line in Christian County has damage a lot of trees have fallen and power is expected to be out for up to 3 weeks.
Mayfield only has two buildings open. The town is running out of water due to a main water break damaged. A crisis and power may not be on till Valentines Day or even a little later.
Lets all pray for all the victims of the Ice Storm.

Storm for the ages
Not a lot in areas to the west and north of where I am in Hopkinsville Kentucky. parts of Trigg, Christian, and Todd got somewhat spared because of the rain mixing in at the end of the first round and beginning of the second, but even there some ice accumulations up to 1/2 to 1 inch occurred. The absolute worst is across the Jackson Purchase area and north of US 68. Areas like Paducah and Mayfield and across most of West KY are still without power and many won't be back on till about a week.
Hope that everyone stays warm and we in West KY will are make it though. I defiantly feel for those in West KY and parts of Arkansas and Missouri without power.

Dangerous Storm Continues
With over 60,000 people without power in KY most in West KY and round two moving in power outages and the economic impact of towns will be great.
Some towns esp. hard hit small towns like Bardwell might have power for a week to two and it might take to Valentines Day to get everyone on the grid.
Assemble the prepareness kit now and be prepared for extended power outages and near impossible travel as the temperature will dive under 28 for all of West KY

Wicked Weather
Damage in West KY is mounting as up to an inch of ice. Damage to Murray State I heard of. A lot of reports of fires and accidents. And power outages. Stay safe for the 2nd round which could be almost as bad as the 1st one. Than afterwards 1 to 3 inches of snow and sleet could get involved.
advice
Stay away from powerlines if you are online. Be careful only travel if you have to. 1 to 3 inches of snow possible at the end tomm night and wed. Rain will mix in across most of West Kentucky. Freezing Rain across NW KY before a change to snow is observed.
update again
31 years ago Blizzard of 78 teared though this area. Ironic another major winter storm is producing major sleet and ice and maybe even snow issues across West KY 31 years later.
Webster County has 3/4 inches of sleet on the roads. Mayfield, Paducah, Fulton has about 1/3 inch of ice and some power issues. Hopkinsville has about 15/100- 1/4 inch of ice. More freezing rain continues but temps have rose a few degrees so a change to plain rain at the end of this round is possible.

I will post the PAH weather story map. It really shows what I expect across West KY.
Ice- Up to an inch of ice maybe even a little more still in the works thru early wed.
Snow- Up to 6 to 10 inches of mostly snow with some sleet
Sleet area- 2 to 4 inches of sleet with up to 1 inch of snow and .1 to .3 inches of ice.
MAJOR WINTER STORM MODE
Ice Storm and Winter Storm Warnings are out for tonight to tomm. night.
Precipitation will occur in two rounds one tonight/early tomm the other late tomorrow into Wedensday.
Snow zone Owensboro and Henderson 6 to 10inches of snow with some sleet. (Union, Daviess, Henderson, Crittenden, North parts of Webster and Mclean counties) Very low visibilities may occur in this area.
Hopkinsville, Fulton, Murray, Elkton, Bowling Green. Probably upwards to 1 inch of pure ice. widespread tree damage and powerlines and might flirt very close with the ice storms of 94 and 51 at worse case. Tuesday Rain might mix if it does the damage will already be done. (Fulton, Carlisie, Graves, Calloway, Trigg, Christian, Todd, Muhlenburg)
Paduach to Livermore and Madisonville. In between could see an inch of snow. Several inches of sleet. And 1/4 to 1/3 inch of ice. (Hickman, Ballard, McCracken, Livingston, Marshall, Caldwell, Lyon, Hopkins, Mclean)
Marion to Henderson to Owensboro. This is mostly snow with some sleet mixed. If more sleet mixes the snow values are less. If less mixes the snow values more. I would say probably not a lot of sleet mixes but some does. 6 to 10 inches of snow seems possible in this area. near Marion to Providence KY and southern Daviess should mix with more sleet and even a little freezing rain maybe. So that might keep the snow totals slightly less there compared to Union, Henderson, and most of Daviess Counties.

2nd call map
Green- 1/2 ice maybe even 3/4 inch ice. Could see dusting of snow and some sleet accumulation.
Red- 3 to 7 inches of snow and sleet maybe more.
Yellow- Ice more towards Mayfield and Hoptown. Sleet and even snow towards Madisonville. May accumulate several inches of snow. 2-5 in northern sections of this area. Up to 1/2 inch of ice towards Hoptown.
Some areas may see 3 to 7 inches of snow or more. Some areas may see 1/2 to 3/4 inch of ice.

ZOOM in for more info. Red is best ice threat. The Blue is more lesser and less confident ice threat. Should of maybe extended the blue a little to the east to include East TN. This map is probably the most accurate in West and Mid TN. In East TN the landforms get more tricky and i'm less familiar with the area.
thanks to Geology. Com
Red, Yellow, Green light Call map 1 of 3
A good what i want to call my 1st red light/green light/ yellow light diagram.
RED LIGHT- Usually this means stop, but for this wintry situation this is where = the highest confidence of a major winter storm exists. This includes where most if not all of the precipitation until Wed Morning will be Snow/Sleet/Freezing Rain. Snow could accumulate up to 6 inches here or 1 to 4 if a lot of sleet mixes in. Ice may also accumulate up to .1 to .3 inches if warmer solutions apply.
GREEN LIGHT- Snow/Sleet/Freezing Rain/ even mixing with Rain can occur here. This area might have the most precipitation and might if cold enough has the most wintry precipitation. 1 to 4 inches of snow and sleet and .1 to .3 inches of ice is possible here.
YELLOW LIGHT- Sleet/Freezing Rain/Rain is the main precipitation. This area more than the others will probably receive rain near the end. The question is does this area get spared from greatest ice. If it doesn't up to 1/2 to 9/10th inch of ice in local areas is to be expected with devastating consequences in the area effect on absolute worse case. In best case maybe 1/10th inch of ice than a cold 33 to 35 degree rain that could be heavy.
Winter Storm Likely Mon Night/Wed Morning
Error: Should have a confidence level of 1 for Day 4.
The confidence levels so far are kinda low because we are waiting on the 12Z runs. Still despite the 00Z runs coming together you still have the past models in so much chaos. If the 12Z runs are more favorable for winter weather will go up to confidence level of 3.
Pretty much the pieces are set for a pretty nasty winter storm across West KY and North Middle TN. In West KY the uncertainty is precip types. For Henderson, Union, Daviess, Webster, and Mclean I think mostly snow and sleet will occur mixing at first with freezing rain. If the event stays most snow or snow or sleet than 6 to 10 inches of white stuff cannot be ruled out this area. There is a lot gulf moisture for all the waves that will move along a stalled front that is placed in South TN/ North Alabama area. The Arctic air is also quite shallow and with warm air moving on top of it most of West KY might have a good sleet/freezing rain event.
Right now the worst icing appears to be from Paduach to Central City KY line south with a sleet/freezing rain and even at times mixing with plain rain.
With more snow and sleet in Henderson, Union, Webster, Daviess, and Mclean county. In which the most sleet and snow accumulations should occur.
In the small area in between some good sleet/snow/ and even glaze should occur. This area from about Smithland, Marion, Princeton, Providence KY looks to get the chance of both good snow/sleet accumulations and ice accumulations.
Later a call map will be made with more detail. There is a Winter Storm Watch in effect for all of West KY. Which means that a pretty potent winter storm is possible, so be getting prepared for sig. snow, sleet, and ice accumulations. Even a small shift effects precipation types and precipation amounts greatly

hazards next week
A complex mid range forecast is coming up for the Western Bluegrass. The Euro shows a warmer solution with more of an ice to rain event for West KY. Most all the others show a mix of snow/sleet/freezing rain some going on into Day 5 Wednesday. There is a lot of disagreement between OP and the ENSEMBLES. A shallow arctic air mass like this is always tough to forecast for. If most models are right or the mid range solution is range. I would watch for a possible Winter WX Advisory or maybe more. There are several model runs and now casting to go until the Monday Night-Tuesday timeframe occurs.
Friday, January 23, 2009
WInter WX event possibly coming soon?
This is not out of the realm of reality. An event we have been watching most of this week is starting to consistently show on the models. There is a lot of uncertainty or precip amounts and exact types because of the nature of this system. This appears to be an overrunning event. In which a stalled out front will stall out somewhere in TN or even N MS and N AL. You will have that warm gulf moisture that we have been waiting for and an arctic air mass created a temp gradient along the mentioned stalled out front.
Tommorow if there is enough confidence in it I will make a hazards map and assign a confidence level number to it if the trends are favorable.

The 10th anniversary of a quite impressive tornado outbreak and is very similar to the Super Tuesday Outbreak. Luckliy I felt that this one was a little bit more prepared for, and also this outbreak didn't quite contain as many f-3 and f-4 tornadoes as Super Tuesday did.
This was still one of Arkansas biggest tornado outbreaks. With tornadoes in the Little Rock metro area. Tornadic storms near the Memphis area. Camden and Clarksville TN really got hit hard with F3 tornadoes early in the morning of Jan 22nd.
In West Ky wind damage was reported in Todd County. A tornado hit Ballard County/West Paduach with several injuries to a mobile home. In West KY the storms started on Midnight on the 22nd. And continued until about 5am the 22nd.
If anyone has any thoughts to share. Or describe what might this outbreak a good one.

Happy MLK day
Today is Martin Luther King JR. day.
I just thought I would take this blogspot to give honor to this day. As in race relations we are going in a right direction, but there is so much that needs to be done. With the Civil Rights movement we started the foundation of making race relations better.

snowy update
With more snow bands forming in south central KY. these bands can add another dusting to Christian, Todd, Muhlenberg counties. Also to east of Nashville make the snow event more interesting. Some areas towards Byrdstown and Crossville could pick up to 2 inches.
Bremen KY did get 1 inch today.

In case it is too sloppy
Dark Blue- A half inch to an inch
Light Blue- A dusting to 3/4 of an inch
Green- Just a flurries will fly event probably at best.
Very low confidence on this. I really don't see widespread areas of 1 inch plus due to temps around or above freezing and limited moisture.
Like weather we can all be wrong. With temps in the 20's tonight any moisture on the road could make travel a little tricky for tomorrow morning.

The 15th year anniversery of the 1994 Winter Storm.
6) ICEBOX 1994 Jan. including a Jan Snowstorm- An intense winter storm hit right before the Ice Storm of 1994. This storm produce 6-11 inches plus along with some ice even though the icing wasn't as bad as Feb. Jan icing on top of 5 to 11 inches of snow made travel pretty much impossible. Near Blizzard conditions occurred in West KY and parts of TN. The Governor of KY at the time closed all interstates and US highways for the first time in KY history.
The big major event was the worst Cold Snap in our lifes as 08'ers and if you were around in 60's and 70's maybe close 2nd worst cold snap. Lows were as low as believe this right here in West KY up towards -22F on Jan 19th-20th 1994. A low of -1 was recorded in Nashville TN with near Zero temps as far south as the TN/AL border. This cold snap even caused a slab to fall down in Mammoth Caves which is one of the most geologically altering events in the cave in hundreds of years. Lows include

The record cold list from NWS PAH
The temperatures from -1 to 6 for lows were not records. We need snowcover most of the time to get record cold. If we had snowcover we could of probably set a daily or even all time record low in this setup.

Minus the temparture
This lesson is where in some west ky areas you minus the temperature from zero.
Some areas could go to -3 degrees in Henderson and Owensboro without snow cover. Even hoptown could go below zero.
Nice sun will warm the temperature up a good deal though at least.

Extreme Cold help
- Dress in Layers. Wear Gloves and Cover all areas of skin
- Practice good space heater rules. Make sure you don't put your heater in anything combustible. This is why house fires spike in cold waves.
- Bring all pets and livestock in sheltered area. The up to -10 windchills can effect them to. Speaking of -10 windchills you can get frostbite in exposed areas in 45 minutes.
- Let your faucets drip so they wont freeze.
- Shelter your children when they go out to the bus stop.
That is my basic list.

Update on the Clipper
Right now the radar is quiet. A big question I can't really answer is will that be the case later tonight and tomorrow. There is a lot dry air around and a clipper is supposed to move into the area. The best case with warm ground still from the upper 40's today is probably about 1/2 to maybe near a 1 inch I think at best.
Or course we could get nothing but flurries.
It is so unconfident that I can't even place a 1 confidence level forecast for it. Also pretty much any winter wx is probably going to be less than 1 inch of snow.
Check and be sure just in case I am wrong.

first time i posted in what seems like forever
Long time no post that will change though.
Another clipper for Mid TN. Lets see if we can muster up 1 to 2 inches of snow again. Last time we weren't so lucky. But what is the harm in trying again. West KY might see less than an inch of snow but more than likely little to none. Best chance is Mid TN the higher elevations Tomorrow afternoon.
Cold snap a lot is unknown about it but it could be 20 degrees below average on temperatures. With lows as low as around zero in nw ky to the 5 to 8 degree range in rest of west ky is possible. Highs will struggle to the 20's. So on Wed-Fri esp dress in layers and watch for frozen pipe danger.

Little Trough System
As the trough moves. We will need to watch this one for light snow showers in West KY even though only trace to half inch is expected of snow.
Cumberland Plateau in Mid TN could experience upwards to 2 inches of the white stuff. Due to being below freezing and orographic lift.

...WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 PM CST THIS
EVENING...
THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN PADUCAH HAS ISSUED A WINTER
WEATHER ADVISORY FOR EXTREME SOUTHEAST MISSOURI...AND FAR SOUTHERN
PORTIONS OF WESTERN KENTUCKY...WHICH IS IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 PM CST
THIS EVENING.
AT 1045 AM...PADUCAH RADAR SHOWED A LARGE MASS OF PRECIPITATION
SITTING JUST TO OUR SOUTH...OR JUST SOUTH OF NEW MADRID MISSOURI AND
FULTON KENTUCKY. THIS AREA OF PRECIPITATION WAS GROWING AND
EXPANDING NORTH AND EAST...AND AS IT WAS FALLING IN SUB FREEZING
AIR...WAS PRODUCING LIGHT ICING IN WEST TENNESSEE IN THE FORM OF
FREEZING RAIN AND SLEET. THIS AREA LOOKS LIKE IT IS GOING TO
CONTINUE TO EXPAND NORTH AND EAST AND HIT ALL OF THE SOUTHERN
JACKSON PURCHASE AND SOUTHERN PENNYRILE REGION IN WESTERN KENTUCKY
BY EARLY THIS AFTERNOON...AS WELL AS SPILL OVER INTO NEW MADRID
AND MISSISSIPPI COUNTIES IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI. TEMPERATURES AT OR
BELOW FREEZING WILL MEAN AT LEAST SOME LIGHT ICING PROBLEMS AND
POTENTIALLY COULD MEAN MORE HAZARDOUS ICING CONDITIONS.
WHILE TEMPERATURES MAY WELL HIT 32 OR ABOVE ALONG THE TENNESSEE
BORDER...FURTHER NORTH INTO THE KENTUCKY BORDER COUNTIES...THE
TEMPERATURES MAY BE BELOW FREEZING...SO THE ICING POTENTIAL DOES
EXTEND THRU THE ENTIRETY OF THE KENTUCKY BORDER COUNTIES. THIS
WILL BE ESPECIALLY TRUE FOR ELEVATED SURFACES LIKE BRIDGES AND
OVERPASSES...WHICH MAY REMAIN BELOW FREEZING EVEN IF AIR
TEMPERATURES HIT JUST ABOVE.
BE AWARE OF THIS POTENTIALLY HAZARDOUS ICING PROBLEM THIS
AFTERNOON INTO EARLY THIS EVENING AND MAKE YOUR TRAVEL PLANS
ACCORDINGLY. THIS WILL IMPACT THE DRIVE HOME FROM WORK OR SCHOOL
SO YOU MAY CONSIDER LEAVING EARLY OR AT LEAST DRIVING SLOWLY AND
CAREFULLY TO BE ESPECIALLY CAUTIOUS WITH POTENTIAL SLICK SPOTS.
