Heat Safety Rules

Heat Safety Rules from the National Weather Service.

http://www.weather.gov/om/heat/index.shtml

Hot days continue

Heat days have been in the forecast for awhile and that is where they will remain. A dominant high pressure system will keep us mostly dry and hot throughout the week and weekend. Any rain chances will likely be very isolated throughout the period.

Happy Memorial Day

Remember all those who fought for us so that we can enjoy this glorious day.

Sunday, May 29, 2011

5 out of 5 wind will be calmer

Very hot but nice lake day. 5 out of 5 lake day and the winds will be calmer.

Saturday, May 28, 2011

5 out of 5 Lake Day's for the rest of the weekend.

Here is some great weather news. Not only is today a 5 out of 5 lake day, but looking ahead at the forecast. We can make Sunday the 29th and Memorial Day 5 out of 5 lake days as well. Temperatures will be very warm to hot and skies sunny a perfect weather for the all the lakes and rivers that Western Kentucky and Western Middle Tennessee have to offer.

Update to a 5 out of 5 lake day

Will update today's lake day forecast to a 5 out of 5 a great day for both the LBL and Lake Malone areas.. Sunny skies already for the southern 2/3rds of the lake will spread across all of the lakes by midday. Along with temperatures in the Middle 80's. Do watch for possible debris on the lakes from the flood.

Debris is possible in the lakes

http://www.wpsdlocal6.com/news/local/More-dangers-for-memorial-day-boaters-122741399.html
Watch out for debris in the lakes after the flood.

Lake Day Forecast for Saturday

For Saturday the 28th day of May. The lake day forecast will be at a 4 out of 5. A very great lake day the only reason that may keep it from being perfect will be early morning to afternoon cloudcover may hang around. If cloudcover erodes fast then in the morning then I will upgrade to a 5 out of 5 lake day forecast.

Updated Lake Day forecast for today

For today will lower the lake day forecast from 4 out of 5 to 3 out of 5. This is due to the remaining clouds and the possibility that many areas in both the LBL area and Lake Malone may not reach above the 75 degree threshold I would use to consider a good lake day. Also clouds will hang around in the area till afternoon. No rain chances though so you can stay enjoy it.

Lake Day outlook for Friday

A Lake Day forecast rating of 4 out of 5 will be given to the Land Between the Lakes and Lake Malone areas for Friday the 27th. Temperatures may be a little on the cool side with highs in the mid 70's for the lakes area. Some cloudcover and maybe a stray shower in the northern parts of the lakes overnight are possible. Still a pretty good lake day. Saturday-Monday look even better.

Lake Day Outlook

Starting on Friday for Memorial Day Weekend and running until Labor Day Weekend will be the lake day forecast. Which will be the forecast for the Land Between the Lakes(Marshall, Calloway, Trigg, Lyon, Livingston KY, and Henry/Stewart/Houston/Benton counties in TN.) and Lake Malone(Todd, Muhlenberg,Logan counties in KY) areas. This will determine whether it is a good lake day, a bad lake day, or just an okay lake day. A rating of 1 is the worst possible lake day you can get while a 5 is the best possible lake day you can get.. Also the lake day forecast will be given if possible the night before, and revised if needed. All weekends (Friday,Saturday, Sunday, and even Monday on holiday weekends) from Memorial Day until Labor Day will have a Lake Day forecast number. The 4th of July will also have a lake day forecast as well. Doesn't include normal weekdays, as the best lake tourism is the the weekend if requested I could give a quick weekday overview. 5 is the best, 1 is stay at the lodge or stay home day. More on that at the bottom of this way to long note. First lake day outlook will be for Friday, and I will try to do that Tonight.

Summertime weather is hard to follow. A lot of summertime days will feature isolated to scattered storms that will pulse up and then die down.

This will be tracked on facebook, and on blogspot http://www.blogger.com/home?pli=1. Either way my profile or that blogspot will have it also if you follow Western KY Weather on facebook it will contain the lake day forecast.

What Makes a Great Lake Day(factors) 5 out of 5

- Sunny and clear days: Many late spring and summer days have at least a 20% of summer time heat of time isolated showers/storm. Unless there is a organized low or some type of boundary it isn't an all day event. Of course on days where washouts are expected these are your 1 or 2 out of 5 lake days.

- Lack of severe thunderstorms: This goes along with the first one. Since KY severe wx season is Apr-Jun and late May and June are prime lake months this can be an important one. SPC outlooks assign risks Slight, Moderate, and High for potential for severe weather. Any time a Moderate or High Risk is assigned expect a lake day rating no higher than 3 on the lake day rating for a Moderate, and 2 for a High. As damaging winds especially can become big time Lake hazards. Also Tornadoes and Hail can mess up a great lake day.

- Lack of High and Gusty Wind (non thunderstorm): High Wind days can be bad news for the lake days. These days can disrupt fishing, cause boating and swimming hazards, knock down weak limbs and in extreme cases entire trees, and if the ground is really dry can cause wild and brush fires. NWS for lake season issues Lake Wind Advisories for 35MPH gust or higher or when 25mph is sustained. Some high wind events a Wind Advisory or even High Wind Watch or Warning may be issued. This can really lower the lake rating even if the day is expected to be clear.

- Warm day but not extreme heat days (days were high index values are expected to be over 105) Of course coming into the summer days will be hot. I am not talking about days that are in the low 90's with little humidity. Or typical hot summer days what could be hazardous even to a lake day is these days were the heat index (what the temperature feels like to you combining the temperature with humidity) is around or over 105 degrees, or those triple digit days where being out and overworking yourself is dangerous to your health. These dangerous temperatures can even make a lake day sticky and dangerous. When a Heat Advisory or Excessive Heat Warning is in effect expect no better than a 3 on the lake day rating scale. There were a few days in 2009 that were only a 3 out of 5 due to cool temps.

5- Very confident to near certain of a great lake day: Get out and enjoy (best rating)

4- Pretty confident of a great lake day: There may be some gusty winds, or isolated thunderstorms, but nothing that would ruin the whole day.

3- So-So: This is a day that could go either way. There may be a slight risk of severe wx, but it expected to ruin the day, or it could be a really nice day, but it is either to windy, or too hot. Or there could be scattered thunderstorms that could ruin at least part of the day. I would still go to the lake on a 3 out of 5 day, but would use caution

2- Not a good lake day: May want to re-plan, or if you decide to go to the lake watch out for weather hazards that more than likely could be present. This past 4th of July was this one. These days usually are washouts, or may not be washouts, but could have part of the day where a significant severe wx, or flooding event could occur. Or a 2 out of 5 may be clear, but could feature 50-60 MPH wind gusts, and or an extreme, record breaking heat wave could be the reason for the 2 out of 5 lake day, despite the fact that it is clear. If you go to the lake on this day, stay tuned to the weather. If it is a 2 out of 5 due to heat (although this will likely be a 3 out of 5 as long as everything else is good) limit your outdoor activity, and drink plenty of fluids. If the IKE wind day in Sept 2008 was a lake day it would make a case for a 2 out of 5 days mostly due to the wind gusts.

1- Very confident that this will be a bad lake day: Either a total washout is expected or a severe weather outbreak, extreme winds, or in many of 1 out of 5 lake days a combo of the things listed above. This will be a rare rating a 1 out of 5 lake day will be a day, that you won't even need me to tell it is bad, you will just know it (worst rating)

Updates

The NWS of Paducah is planning on surveying damage. Today they will be in SE Missouri and Southern Illinois. Tommorow they are planning to survey the Owensboro KY area to see if a tornado did touchdown from Owensboro KY and go across the river into Rockport IN. Also Saturday they will also likely go examine damage in Trigg County and possibly Webster County. Also they may examine the wind damage paths across Northwestern KY and the Paducah area to make sure no real enhanced wind damage or brief tornadoes occurred. Some trees and powerlines are still down so be aware of those. Areas like Cadiz/Linton and Daviess/Webster County where some damage occurred please respect the people of these communities and don't go down there and gawk at the damage. Thankfully no deaths occurred in Western KY or anywhere due to the storms that is great news.

Quick post storm thought

We got spared the worst of it. I am very blessed and thankful for the lord watching over us. Thankful for the squall line to form and not be discrete supercells. We do have some wind damage and possibly some tornado damage did occur across Western KY. Not to the extent that it would of occurred had supercells formed out ahead of the line.

That we are thankful of. Any survey results I will post on here and will do some review of the event.
Hopkinsville is clear.
No Tornado Warnings for West KY some rotation in Muhlenberg County, but still just a Severe Thunderstorm Warning. Eastern Christian, Montgomery, Todd, Muhlenberg some wind potential these storms.
West Side of Hopkinsville, Gracey, Crofton take cover.

Update of the storm.

Strong rotation spinup in Northern Stewart County. Linton, Roaring Spring are in the path of this storm. This storm if continues will likely go right over the heart of Hopkinsville.

Severe storms are moving

If you live in New Concord, Linton, Crofton, Cadiz, Gracey, Mannington, White Plains, Nortonville you need to take cover now some tornado warned storms in the area.

Update

Reports of a funnel cloud north of Cadiz. Cerulean, Cobb, Crofton, Mannington need to hit the deck and take cover now.

Take cover now

Cobb, Princeton, Dawson Springs, Mannington, Crofton, Morton's Gap, Earlington, White Plains KY you need to take cover now.

Owensboro KY Storm

Owensboro needs to take cover a funnel cloud and possible tornado is heading towards St. Joesph and Owensboro.

Tornado Warning for Lyon, Caldwell, far north Trigg County

Princeton and Cobb are in the path of this storm. Very large Hail, Damaging Winds, and maybe even a tornado is possible in this storm.

Henderson County Storm

Take cover in the Henderson KY area for a tornado warned storm and 70+ MPH winds.

Take cover

Hardin, Brewers, and far NW Calloway county need to take cover now for a Tornado Warned storm.

Big Time Wind Threat

Update: A QLCS event is moving across Western KY. Damaging winds of 70+MPH are being reported along with funnel clouds. I'm starting to think our strong to violent tornado threat is going down, but still a tornado threat and widespread damaging winds exist. These damaging winds could cause as much damage as a weak tornado.

Funnel Cloud reported

Funnel Cloud reported on 28th Street in Paducah.

Be careful

Paducah and Mayfield and Clinton storms are heading your way. Take cover

Weather update

Weather update for Hickman, Fulton, Carlisle, Ballard, and McCracken. Tornado Warnings are in effect for this area. Take cover now Paducah itself is not under a Tornado Warning as of now, but could be in within the next 30 mins. Damaging wind, hail, and tornado threat all exist. This will eventually move into Paducah in 30 mins.

Take Cover

Ballard, Carlisle, Hickman, Fulton, and NW McCracken County Tornado Warning till 7:15pm this has produced a funnel cloud.

Strong Tornado Threat continues

http://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/md/md0968.html

Strong Tornado threat continues into Western KY.

Closetdiving

Dear folks of Ballard, Carlisle, Hickman, and Fulton Counties: Be prepared to go closetdiving and take cover from this line of severe and rotating storms about to cross the MS. Rivers warnings are expected shortly.

Tornado Warning update

Tornado Warnings now approach the MS River. Tornado Warnings will be likely for Ballard, Carlisle, Hickman, and Fulton Counties within the next hour. These storms have a history of producing tornadoes, large hail, and winds in excess of 75MPH

Ballard, Carlisle, Hickman, Fulton Counties

Weather Update: Ballard, Carlisle, Hickman, and Fulton counties. Supercells, Bow Echos, and a wide array of storms are located in SE Missouri. These storms have a history of producing tornadoes, damaging winds upwards to 75MPH, and large hail up to size of golfball's. Be prepared in the next hour or so to be in the path of these storms.
Although development along the main line of supercells never occurred. We still have the main line of supercells in SE MO into Eastern Arkansas. Moving Northeastward. Due to the shear involved most of these will be tornado warned as they move into Western Kentucky and a few of those could produce tornadoes.
The chance for a strong to violent long tracked tornado is still there for Western KY and far Western Middle TN with this line of supercells. It also may turn quasi linear and produce damaging winds and isolated strong tornadoes into Western Middle even towards Metro down to Waynesboro TN during the overnight.

Update Time

From the Storm Prediction Center. THE TORNADO THREAT IS EXPECTED TO MARKEDLY INCREASE ACROSS SE
MO...FAR SRN IL...WRN KY OVER THE NEXT 1 TO 2 HOURS. SUPERCELLS WITH
LONG-TRACK TORNADOES ARE FORECAST TO DEVELOP AND MOVE NEWD ACROSS
TORNADO WATCH 370.

Remember you can follow along on facebook for a little bit more information at Western Kentucky Weather.

Still a little cap.

Thankfully that shower dissipated Western KY proper still has a little cap, but convection is rapidly getting severe in MO and Arkansas and that will move this way towards the evening hours

Calloway and Trigg County update

Update for Calloway and Trigg Counties. A shower has formed northeast of Murray and another one east of the lakes. Right now it isn't a big deal, but you never know when a shower could turn into a supercell.

Weather update

A Cap helped limit storms till now. This is changing as the low pressure moves closer to our area. Cold air aloft will help shatter the Cap and supercell formation will take off after 3pm. Strong to Violent Tornadoes, Very large Hail, and Damaging Winds are the main threats.

Particularly Dangerous Situation

A rare 5 out of 5 High Risk Tornado chance for Western KY. This is a very serious situation. PDS Tornado Watch remains in effect until 9pm. Thanks to Fred Gossage for supplying the map that I use for Western Kentucky weather.

PDS Tornado Watch is coming.

http://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/md/md0954.html
A PDS Tornado Watch is about to be issued for Western KY and Northern Middle TN.

I have to use this scary wording

Prepare for a potential devastating tornado outbreak in Western Kentucky and Western Middle TN now. The environment is such that very large hail and major long tracked tornadoes are a real threat. Anyone from a line from Louisville KY to Russellville KY to Springfield TN to Parsons TN west needs to prepare for a potential disaster now.

Tornado Outbreak Update

The next update will be posted at around 11:30am. Remember these tornado rules.

- Don't ignore any flooding or lightning threats in severe storms. Tornadic Storms and intense squall lines are known to be loaded with lightning.

- Even in a Severe Thunderstorm Warning when enhanced wind is expected evacuate mobile homes/tents/vulnerable structures.

- Get out of mobile homes in an event of a tornado warning, and if you live in a mobile home or vulnerable home know your nearest shelter.

- If a Tornado Warning is issued either get to a basement or underground shelter if that is not available use an interior hallway or closet or bathroom.

- Have NOAA WX Radio

- Have more then one may to get warnings in case that one way you have fails

Moderate Risk Zone

The following West KY communities are under a Moderate Risk of Severe Weather. Hopkinsville, Elkton, Greenville, Central City. Tornadoes(a few may be strong), Very Large hail(up to softball sized), and Damaging winds are possible in this area.

High Risk Zone

The following KY communities are under a High Risk of Severe Weather. Paducah, Murray, Cadiz, Henderson, Smithland, Fulton, Mayfield, Wickliffe, Marion, Morganfield, Princeton, Madisonville, Benton KY. Destructive and potentially deadly tornadoes, very large hail up to softball size, and damaging winds are possible in this area.
The following NW Middle TN communities are under a High Risk of Severe Weather. Paris TN, Paris Landing State Park TN. Destructive and potentially deadly tornadoes, very large hail up to softball size, and damaging winds are possible in this area.

Big Event is likely today

Some bad news is that the event from the previous night did not move across Western KY. This more instability for this area, and since it went to our north outflow boundaries will move and serve as additional focal points for explosive storm development.

  • Large Hail(some up to the size of softballs)
  • Tornadoes(some could strong or long tracked)
  • Damaging Winds(some could feature upwards to 70MPH winds)

Tuesday, May 24, 2011

A Big Severe Event is becoming likely.

There is a good chance that this could be our biggest May outbreak in Western Kentucky since at least the Memorial Day Weekend Outbreak of May 29th-31st. The Tornado Confidence Level will likely need to be upgraded but will wait for morning data and the SPC Day 1 outlook to decide on whether this is necessary of not.

^^ Special Weather Statement from the NWS of Paducah and features tornado safety rules^^

Update time

Some wind and hail are possible in the stronger storms late tonight after midnight. This won't be the major threat. The major threat should start at around 2pm and go into tomorrow night. Wednesday and Wednesday Night sound like a good time to have a NOAA Weather Radio. Refer to NWS and local media forecast's and my note(posted on this site below) for details.

Dangerous

Remember you can add Western Kentucky Weather on facebook. I will update everyone tonight and tomorrow morning. I will also post links for you to get warnings as well. Tomorrow is a very dangerous severe weather day so be careful and stay alert.

Note I posted on facebook.

On this note please if you are tagged rely the information to all family and friends that you know. Can't tag everyone

This has been a record and very devastating spring severe weather season across the nation, and even usi n Western KY faced a record amount of tornadoes this past April. Luckily and it stays this way. Western KY has yet to report a tornado fatality other communities have not been so lucky. Another round starts today in KS/OK/North TX/West ARK/SW MO today and moves to our area tomorrow and tomorrow night.

If you know anyone in Central or Eastern Oklahoma, South Central/Southeast Kansas, North Texas, or Western Arkansas and far SW Missouri they need to be highly alert in the next 12 to 18 hours. As a historic tornado event is becoming likely in that area. The same system that will cause the issues there will move into MO and IL tomorrow putting Western KY and portions of Middle TN in harms way.

Today- Isolated severe storms could form today in Middle TN(one already has formed) and Western KY. The intense stuff will stay in South KS, Oklahoma, and North TX through the early evening and move into MO and Arkansas in the overnight into tomorrow morning.

Tomorrow- A Moderate Risk of Severe Weather is in effect for all of Western KY. In Middle TN it is in effect from Springfield TN to Ashland City TN to Centerville TN line westward. Development refires along cold front/dryline from Eastern Missouri into Central Arkansas and North Louisiana in the afternoon. Another area of development may also fire along a warm front and possibly secondary low formation from Southern Illinois and possibly extend into the Purchase area of West KY and even far NW TN during the afternoon. This supercell development along Western KY and NW Middle TN is an uncertain part of the forecast. If it occurs the tornado and very large hail threat will increase. The formation in Eastern MO, and Central Arkansas is expected to form a squall line and race across Western Kentucky and Middle TN but weaken as it exits the MDT and moves east of I-65. Some hail/wind development may take place along and east of I-65 during the day on Thursday.

Threat rundown/Timing: Anytime from Wednesday Afternoon though the overnight hours of Wednesday Night.

Storm Mode: Possible supercells in the afternoon and evening which may or may not form. Squall Line/QLCS in the nighttime hours which will probably almost certainty form. Very Large Hail, Damaging Winds, and even a Tornado threat are likely on both modes. If supercells form out in the afternoon and evening and the wind shear is good a strong and long lived tornado threat may occur we will need to watch that. Locally heavy rain and flooding is possible if storms train over the same areas.

All of West KY and the MDT risk in Mid TN should be on alert this includes but is not limited to. Murray KY, Paducah KY, Fulton KY, Hopkinsville KY, Henderson KY, Owensboro KY, Bowling Green KY, Mayfield KY, Smithland KY, Wickliffe KY, Elkton KY, Cadiz KY, Marion KY, Greenville KY and all of Western KY. In TN this includes Memphis TN, Jackson TN, Union City TN, Paris TN, Dover TN, Clarksville TN, Dickson TN, Linden TN, Parsons TN, Waverly TN, Camden TN, Lexington TN, Pleasant View TN, Savannah TN, Milan TN, Dyersburg TN or form a Springfield TN to Ashland City TN to Centerville TN line westward.

Awareness: Keep NOAA WX Radio handy, and have more then one source of warning(Noaa WX Radio, TV/Media, Radio, a friend, etc.) in case one of your sources fails. Follow these tornado rules.

The Good news is after we get past Wednesday we have Memorial Day Weekend and a much better forecast for that weekend. With the exception of summertime scattered storms the Memorial Day Weekend looks to be a decent lake weekend. Sunday and Monday look really good. Everyone needs to be on alert tomorrow and tomorrow night.

- Have more then one may to get warnings in case that fails

Active Weather Likely

Active Weather likely. Have a NOAA WX Radio in handy, or someway of getting warned. Having more then one way to get a weather warning is also a good idea.

More widepsread threat Wed.

A more widespread threat of severe weather including a day 2 MDT risk is in effect for all of Western KY and Middle TN from a Clarksville TN to Parsons TN line westward. There are still some questions about the tornado threat and how widespread formation will be. Very Large Hail, Damaging Winds, and Isolated Tornadoes are possible in the MDT risk area.

Monday, May 23, 2011

Need to Watch for Severe Weather

Could be an outbreak of severe weather in NW KY and even some severe threat for Southern KY and Middle TN on Wednesday so we need to watch. Remember NOAA WX radio's come in handy, and having more then one resource to get storm warnings also helps.

- Isolated Severe on Tuesday as of now Wednesday and Wednesday Night are the main threats.

Storm Update

Thunderstorm Watch cancelled for Western KY this should end our overnight threat. Isolated Severe tomorrow, but a system is coming down to our area Wednesday afternoon and night that needs to be watched.

Thunderstorm Watch

A thunderstorm Watch is in effect for all of Western KY until 11pm. Watch for damaging winds and large hail.

Junemester

June Like Weather for a few days today and tomorrow particularly. Tempartures will be in the 87-91 range for all of Western KY today.

- We will face a slight risk of severe storms in far Western KY on Thursday Night, and some chance of strong to severe storms cannot be ruled out on Friday.

- The Ohio River at Golconda and Shawneetown should fall below Major Flood stage today. The Ohio River at Smithland, Paducah, and Cairo will still take several days to fall below Major Flood stage. Should fall below Major Flood Stage anytime from Friday to Sunday or Monday.
- The Miss. River at New Madrid has already crested this past weekend and should gradually fall below major flood stage by next weekend.
- The rivers listed above will probably take weeks to fall totally below flood stage, but once the rivers fall below Major Flood Stage rebuilding and damage assessment and openings of major roadways can really start to be done.

Update on the river situation. Smithland and Paducah are about the highest they will get, but with the historic once in a lifetime flood event on the MS River it won't be able to really drain. Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake are gradually starting to fall towards normal levels.

Thursday, May 5, 2011

Good news and Bad news

Good news on the Ohio River is that the Ohio River is about as high as it will be from Paducah to Smithland to Shawneetown. The bad news is with the historical flooding on the lower Mississippi River the Ohio River won't have anywhere to go so the river will be staying in major flood stage at least through the middle of next week. The Mississippi River still is expected to crest around May 8th but still stay in Major Flood stage for at least another week if not two or three.

Lake Conditions

http://www.kentuckylake.com/lake-conditions.aspx Normal Lake levels are around 359 for late spring and summer. Right now both KY Lake and Lake Barkley are at 372.30 feet, and 372.35 feet respectively.

From Moors Resort

Major River Flooding Continues

The Ohio River at Cairo and Grand Chain are starting to fall. These rivers will still be in Major Flood stage for at least a week. Remember it takes awhile for the major rivers to go down.

The Ohio River at Paducah and Smithland should crest at around 55 feet within the next 12 to 24 hours and begin to gradually fall.
The Mississippi River at New Madrid which will impact Hickman still has a few days before a crest in record territory. Very serious flooding continues in that area. In areas that are starting to fall heavy flooding will still be an issue for about a week because it takes awhile for Major Rivers to go down.

Flooding update

Rivers remain the same. Cairo appears to have flatlined at around 60 feet with no rise. Paducah and Smithland are expected to rise near 55ft and stop.

- Major Flooding is going on along the Ohio, the lakes, and at the Green River at Calhoun. Turn around and do not drown in these areas.

Paducah only at 55.5 feet instead of 58.5, and Paducah and Cairo may actually be in the process of cresting and flatting out.
