Low confidence severe wx event for Thursday/Friday

Click on map to zoom in.

Placement of mesolows, Several MCS clusters, and the exact placement a timing of a warm front than a cold front make a low confidence severe wx and heavy rain forecast. Tomorrow will feature a low cape day but with dewpoints into the 60's there may be enough of an unstable environment for a MCS to produce damaging winds and isolated tornadoes mostly from late morning to mid afternoon, and north of a line from Smithland to Greenville Kentucky. In West KY another low confidence day of severe weather exists Friday and Friday Night but the SPC has highlighted a slight risk for the area.

Thursday's Day 2 slight risk runs from Greenville KY to Smithland KY line north.

Swine Flu

Although no cases are confirmed in KY yet Swine flu is a worry. Even though sometimes things can be blown out of proportion and it is too early to determine whether that is a case, still be aware of swine flu. This shouldn't be anything to panic or lose a lot of sleep over, but be aware of swine flu and take the precautions that are needed in order to prevent it because it could become a major problem.

Swine Flu is a special strand of the flu virus that occurs naturally in pigs.

Symptoms often seem to be a combination of a Stomach Virus(Stomach Flu) and an normal Flu.

- wash your hands often and with detail
- cover your coughs and sneezes
- if you are sick stay home
- try to avoid contact with those that are sick

If you are sick
- stay home
- get plenty of rest
- drink plenty of fluids
- call a doctor or hospital if symptoms seem worse than a mild to a moderate flu

7 years ago April 28th 2002 Tornadoes

7 years ago a wild Morning outbreak of tornadoes occured across West KY and surrounding states.

One super cell in this outbreak produced tornadoes in SE MO, S IL, and W KY.

- the first tornado of the night started in Dixon Springs IL around 1:50am and moved into the Joy community of Livingston County after 2am. It was rated an F3 on the original Fugita scale. The worst damage was in Illinois and 1 injury occurred.

- In Crittenden County KY two tornadoes touched down between 2:30am and 2:45am. Both F1's one in Sheridan community and another Northeast of Marion with minor damage in both of them.

- The biggest tornado in West KY started in East Crittenden County touched down at 2:50am. and moved into SW Webster county hitting the town of Providence KY head on (this town would get a hit by an F1 during the Memorial Day Weekend Outbreak of 2004) 26 injuries occured in or near Providence with one critcal injury most in a moblie home park that was devasted. It went into Hopkins county and dissipated around Hanson. The worst damage was in Providence KY (webster county) and Nebo KY (north Hopkins County)

In Mid TN An F3 touches down in Rutherford County in which siginficant damage is reported 8 miles of Murfressboro TN and 20 injuries occured.

In West KY and Mid TN no tornado deaths occured out of this outbreak, but some states weren't so lucky.

Wild Plains day coming.

High Risk coming out for the plains. Strong tornadoes and damaging hail storms with hail stones bigger than 4 inches in diameter are possible in the MDT and High Risk for the plains. Great VC and real life chase day for West/Central Oklahoma, South and Central Kansas, and parts of Eastern TX panhandle and NW TX.

April 26th Weather Threat assessment

Warm and Windy today. T-storms all week?

Warm and windy today. In matter of fact today may be the only day that doesn't contain rain chances for awhile.

Starting tomorrow several impulses will be riding along a slow moving cold front. That will give you isolated to scattered thunderstorms all week long. Some days like Tuesday it may be a washout right now some locally heavy rain is expected with no widespread severe for this weeks event.

Warmth is coming

Say hello to a nice subtropical ridge.

Yes this will be the nice subtropical ridge that starting tonight and tommorow will really warm us up. Besides an isolated thunderstorm on Thursday it will also be dry. So a dry and warm weekend what more can be asked. In matter of fact we will be in the mid 80's in West KY some areas even might flurt with the upper 80's. Also summer time outbreaks of thunderstorms may occur in the Plains and northern part of the bread basket, but the Western bluegrass should be dry.

Happy Earth Day

Happy Earth Day even though I don't beleive in the Global Warming hoopa that is occuring I still think that we should do more to protect the planet and make it a little more better.

It is just to bad some people have taken the ideas of Earth Day too far.

Some severe possible in West Ky and Mid TN today. Some of these storms may contain large hail and maybe damaging winds a little later this afternoon. An isolated tornado also cannot be ruled out with some of these storms.

Western Kentucky Weather wants to support Virtual Chase

http://www.theweatherboard.com/

http://www.theweatherboard.com/board/VIRTUAL-CHASETM-f56.html

http://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/outlook/

http://w1.spc.woc.noaa.gov/exper/mesoanalysis/

^^ Some rules and SPC links for VC Chase Day to help you pick out a target.

Virtual Chase 2009 starts on April 20th. Runs to June 20th. Weather Board is running it and you must register there to use it. I will give you an outline of the rules of Virtual Chase and give links for it.

If you want to be involved to go that link and register for Virtual Chase. In Virtual Chase you are a storm chase that works for a company. The goal is to try to catch as much severe weather as you can. Winner is determined by points per chase. Busts where you don't get any points can really hurt you.

On the night before you will select a city or town you want to chase in by Midnight on the night before the chase day. For April 20th you must get your report by 11:59PM on the 19th to be eligible. A chase day is where on 1730Z day 2 SPC outlook a slight risk is issued. You don't have to chase in the slight risk if you don't want to you can opt for the SEE TEXT area instead. Any Slight, MDT, or High risk area you can select from.

To win prizes you must participate in at least 50% of the chases. From April 20th to June 20th in busy years it may be 25 to 30 chases in calmer years it may be only 18 or 19 chases to make 50%. Most May and June days to have at least a slight risk to choose from

Point Scale (within 25miles of your target city)
Wind or Hail- 5
Tornado (within 25)- 10
Tornado (within 5miles)- 20

The points don't stack. So if your target city is Madisonville KY and Earlington has a 1.25 inch hail report, and the northside of town within 5 miles got hit by a tornado. You would get the 20points not 25 for the hail and the tornado within 5 miles, but just 20 points for the Tornado within 5 miles.

- Pick must be in by 11:59pm or 5Z the night before, but also if you decide to move you must do it by 21Z which is by 4PM. If you wanted to move at 1pm to Madisonville KY to Henderson KY for whatever reason you must submit the move by 4pm. If you submit it by 4:01 then it is to late. If you are on the move by 4pm than you are ok and can make it to Henderson as long as you are on the move, but you can't divert or move somewhere else once you get to Henderson after 4PM.

Updated Confidence Map

Severe storms still possible

Severe storms still possible.

This is not expected to be to the level that the Friday storms were but some storms could produce some hail and isolated tornadoes.

The instablity isn't there compared to Friday and the low level shear isn't quite there. Also there is a stalled out MCS along the Gulf Coast that is decreasing good moisture return.

There are several cons in this event.

There may be enough shear and enough instablity to cause a decent threat of mostly large hail plus cold pockets that might enhance the hail threat.

Also West KY timeframe may be more 1pm-6pm instead of 10am-3:15pm

Severe storms possible esp east of the lakes

Some severe storms are possible in West KY today. As a low moves into South Illinois and Central/South Indiana there will be a narrow band of dewpoints in the mid to upper 50's and 1000CAPE. This could allow for supercells to form starting along and east of the Lakes area and move into rest of West/Central KY and Mid TN by around lunchtime.

Storms could with steep lapse rates contain large hail but some storms could produce tornadoes. Due to low confidence on whether the worst storms form in West KY or Central KY only a confidence level on severe storms of 2 will be issued. But if they form they could form large hail, damaging winds, and even maybe a tornado or two.

Still watch this situation even though it is just a slight risk as I posted on the blog.

Timeframes (storm is a little faster than expected)
West KY: 10am-3:15pm
Mid TN: 11:30am-7pm

Sunday, April 12, 2009

Severe storms possible tommorow

Severe storms with large hail, damaging winds, and isolated tornadoes are possible tomorrow. The main time frame should be 2pm-10pm as it stands for now. Beware for possibility another round of severe storms.

EDDYVILLE Damage. EF1 tornado
Storm of the time of the Eddyville KY EF1 Tornado
WX Underground Image of EF0 Tornado around Crofton KY area.
RADAR IMAGE FROM NWS PAH of rotation at the time of the storm.

MANNINGTON KY (Christian CO) house gone.

NWS PAH track map for Christian County area tornado

IF one was to tell me that at least 4 tornadoes would occur in West Kentucky I would think
that you were pulling my leg. On Friday Morning dewpoints were in the low 40's at
best and temps in around 50. What I realized around 8am is that very moist and unstable
air was in N MS and rapidly moving into West and Mid TN and some of it was even moving
into West KY with 500-1000CAPE values and dewpoints into the 50's by the time the event
started to kick off. The first storm formed in Fulton County and went tornado warned it
lasted into Graves County and produced some hail, but no tornado. Then two storms formed
that would be the most prolific for West KY. One in Lyon County that produced a quick EF1
Tornado in Eddyville despite only be T-Storm Warned.
The tornado in Eddyville occurred just
east of town around Exit 4. A commercial building had a wall blown out and a mobile home
blown over. 1 injury due to flying glass occurred. At about that time a storm rapidly
started to rotate as it moved into North Christian.
County. Here it dropped a narrow but intense tornado in Mannington KY area. It destroyed
a well built house and left ceder blocks, two mobile homes, and 1 garage building. 2
injury reports occurred here. The tornado lifted right at the Hopkins/Christian County
line along US 41.

An hour later a supercell produced a second EF0 tornado in the Crofton area. Also some
damage occurred with a micro burst with an EF0 mixed in on the north side of Calloway County.

Things that we learned from this and other events like this
- The reason West KY was under a slight risk is that morning a few hours
before the event kicked off dewpoints were only in the 40's. As the morning
went on rapid instability increases occurred as the warm front lifted into the
area.
- The area of West KY was very close to a strong low that didn't weaken
as quickly as it did.
- Lapse rates are important. When you have high lapse rates along with at least
some shear and decent moisture return you will have big time issues.
- Just because there is severe storms mentioned and not tornadic storms doesn't mean
that I don't expect tornadoes to occur just I am not confident in an outbreak. In this
case I underestimated the lapse rates and instability and should of went tornadic storms
but decided to be conservative and not go Tornadic Storms so I will examine that
more clearly.
- Also a SPC Slight Risk just because it isn't a MDT or HIGH risk doesn't mean tornado can't occur
it means there isn't as much confidence compared to a MDT or HIGH risk day, or activity isn't expected to be on
the level of a MDT or HIGH risk day.
. Slight Risks often times mean that the severe wx is more isolated or scattered. Slight Risk days do have tornado probabilities in some
cases to.

Sometimes Slight Risk days can overproduce so even if it is a slight risk you need to watch for severe weather.
EXAMPLES (slight risk days in West KY and surrounding areas that overproduced) Days with a star beside them
were only slight risks for West KY and a higher risk was in place in a surrounding state or area.
- Evansville/Henderson KY deadly tornadoes of Nov 6th 2005
- October 18th ACT I 2004
- *Good Friday Outbreak 2009 (MDT and even HIGH were in TN/AL/GA but not West KY)
- March 28th 2009 (Corydon KY)
- Jan 7th/8th 2008 Tornado Outbreak
- May 23rd and May 24th and May 26th 2000 Tornado Outbreaks in KY and TN
- *Jan 21st-22nd 1999 (High in West TN, ARK, and N MS but not West KY and NW Mid TN only slight)
There are probably several more but some examples that in worse case models and forecasters make mistakes and
slight risks over perform.

Severe possible tonight and tommorow

Slight Risk of Severe weather continues tonight for most all of West KY. Storms could get severe after midnight. Some of these storms tonight could produce damaging winds, large hail, and isolated tornadoes for tonight.

Slight risk of Severe weather continues for tomorrow east of US 45. Large Hail and Damaging Winds are possible with any storm early in the period or that will form along the cold front after 11am.

Stay tuned for updates on this complex system and severe potential. Keep your NOAA radio or have a source that could wake you up if severe weather strikes in the wee hours of the morning.

Dan Miller (WSMV)

Channel 4 (WSMV) anchor out of Nashville Dan Miller passed away today due to a possible heart attacks. He was a key anchor for NEWS 4. Thoughts and prayers are out for him and his family.

April 8th first update

An intense storm system is taking shape today in the plains. As activity fires in the Ozarks area this evening a MCS like system or clusters could form downstream and into West KY after midnight. Also all of West KY could see severe storms either from stuff remaining overnight tonight or by new convection forming along the cold front that will move though around midday. ... Safety rules for tornadoes...

Tornado Watch number 117 has been issued by the National Weather
Service... .effective until 6 PM CDT... for southwest Indiana... west
Kentucky and most of southern Illinois. The following safety tips
are being provided in hope that the broadcast media will frequently
broadcast these messages while the watch affects their area.

A Tornado Watch means conditions are favorable for the development
of severe thunderstorms which can produce tornadoes in and close
to the watch area. If you are in the watch area... keep informed
of the latest weather information. These storms can develop
rapidly so there may be occasions when advance warning is not
possible.

A Tornado Warning means a tornado has been spotted or indicated by
radar. If you are in the path or near the tornado... take
immediate action to protect life and property. Follow these
safety rules.

In open country... find a ditch... culvert or other low area and
lay down flat. Cover your head with your hands for protection.

In homes or small buildings... go to the basement or a small
interior room on the lowest floor like a Hall or bathroom closet.
Use heavy furniture for shelter or cover yourself with a mattress
or blanket.

In Mobile homes or vehicles... abandon it and go to a substantial
structure or place of safety. Never try to outrun a tornado in a
vehicle.

In schools... hospitals... factories or shopping centers... go to
designated shelter areas. Interior Halls on the lowest levels are
usually the best. Stay away from gymnasiums or auditoriums. Avoid
all outside walls and windows.

The key to tornado survival is to be prepared and take immediate
action when a warning is issued or when you feel threatened.
Remember... the actions you take during a tornado event may save
your life and the lives of those you are responsible for.

Storms in the MS river area

Strong storms are forming along Far NE Ark and MO boothill. These storms may become severe as they move into the Jackson Purchase area of West KY with large hail and damaging winds the main threat.

Severe,Snow,Hard Freeze all in the next 96 hours.

First of all is today's severe weather threat. A warm front is moving ahead of a powerful system. Along with this is a very strong low pressure system moving into the area with a cold front to provide lift. Steep lapse rates and dewpoints in 55 to 60 range is enough for a slight risk of severe weather. Low topped storms moving 50 to 60MPH will possible in West KY and Mid TN this from Midday to Nightfall.

Than the upper levels may be supportive enough to allow for snow to form. Late tonight and tomorrow morning. Since temps will above freezing the snow accumulation seems unlikely but if heavier bands form cannot be ruled out.

Then we will watch the potential for a hard freeze coming on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Severe storms possible today

The time frame for West KY is from Noon to 7PM.

Slight risk of Severe Thunderstorms for Tommorow

West KY is again under a slight risk of severe weather for tomorrow

The threat is a low cape/high shear case of low top supercells and lines. In which some of the storms could produce large hail, damaging winds, and even a brief tornado

Thunderstorms, and a Freeze are coming

in 1968 which is 41 years ago a powerful F-4 tornado touched down north of Murray this tornado damaging the northside of Murray and went into Marshall County and did devastating damage across the area in these two counties the 2 deaths occurred and most of the injuries. This tornado went through Northern Trigg and part of Caldwell before going into Christian County and causing good damaging to the pennyryle Forest Lodge this amazing tornado went 51 miles and 5 counties and caused 2 deaths and 30 injuries it occurred at 11:55pm April 3rd is the start and ending in the pennryle Forest around 1:30am

It went from N Side of Murray and Aurora were the hardest hit communites.

April 2nd 2006 3 years ago from yesterday.

Monday April 2nd is the first anniversary of the Christian County Tornado Outbreak. This an outbreak of severe thunderstorms, supercells, and a serieal Derecho.

1) The atmosphere on April 2nd 2006 was favorable for tornado and severe thunderstorm development. There was amazing wind shear from a intense low. Near 80 degree air was in the area and a powerful cold front was behind the low. With wind shear and instability pretty good the Storm Prediction Center issued a Moderate Risk for western Kentucky surrounded by a slight risk for the rest of middle Tennessee. Look at the link for the for the first day 1 outlook issued http://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/outlook/archive/2006/day1otlk_20060402_1200.html

Sunlight and heating occurred during the afternoon allowed for the first sotmrs to form 3 and 4pm around middle Tennessee where wind reports were rrecieved. Later that afternoon around 5 supercells exploded in Missouri and to the north of the supercells a huge line decorated with supercells and bow echos. This line will produce wind damage in St Louis, All of Southern and Central Indiana, Owensboro and Henderson kentucky through the bluegrass a bunch of tornadoes were reported in the derecho too.

The Christian County tornado was spawned by long supercells that didn't believe in dying over till they caused grief and damage. One supercell was the tri-state one it went through Arkansas the Missouri boothill striking Carthursville with a devastating hit and went through Bradford Tennessee inculding Dyer and Gibson counties this one had a high death toll and miles of destruction. Carthursville and Bradford look like world war two battlesites after this and it moved to Camden to produce a f-1 tornado Camden Tennessee had tornadoes near by on Nov.15th 2005 and will see more 5 days later. Another supercell formed in Sikeston Missouri this storm developed rotation and went form Sikeston Missouri through Paduach produced a F-0 tornado on the Ballard/Mccracken county line moved through Calvert City with hail, wind, and a funnel cloud. Passed 4 miles north of Hopkinsville produced two F-3 tornadoes continued into Todd County which Allegrie area was damging pretty good and the Clifty. Ended in Northern logan County when it produced a quick F-1 in the rural Logan county than died off. In Christian County 28 injuries were reported. 35 million dollars of damage done a popular Christian county symbol sinking fort church was destroyed, many homes were heavily damaging, many people had to stay in hotels because of the insurance. Todd County get some good damage in rural areas but not near as great as it was in Christian County. Neither county was declared a federal disaster area so individual loans had to be taken out this caused grief and caused people to live cheaply in hotels. When Tennessee got hit hard with tornadoes hope for Federal assistance decreased. The tornado started 3 miles NNE of Gracey in Sinking Fort heavily damaging the community than went through busy country neighborhood on the northern outskirts of Hopkinsville and cut power to the whole city. Homes were destroyed or heavily damaged if in the path of the 185mph wind gust tornado. The first one lifted 6 miles NNE of Hopkinsville than the 2nd one appered and continued ot cause damage form Greenville Road and into Todd Country will the tornado struck rural land just a mile or two to the north of communities like Clifty, Sharon Grove, and Allegrie. Thanks to the NWS PADUCAH FOR A 20 minute lead time from when the tornado hit the Sinking Fort church and a longer lead time for Todd County. No deaths were caused in this tornado although several injuries and a lot of property loss occurred. Thanks to all volunteers and meteorologists and everyone who helped out during the April 2nd Tornado outbreak and praise god that no one in Christian or Todd County died and thanks for everyone helping the unlucky across the country on this day and during the Spring Break 2006 Tornado Episodes of the 2nd and the 7th.

Super Outbreak in Mid TN

The Super Outbreak of April 3rd 1974. Deadly tornadoes IN, OH, KY,TN,AL devastated. 6 F5's and 24 F4's

West KY didn't get hit by a tornado but got hit by several storms producing baseball sized hail. Central KY and Mid TN was a different story.

In Middle TN 38 deaths occurred more than the Super Tuesday Outbreak. As a strong 986MB low moved across North IL to Central MI area bringing a strong cold front until the area. A very strong pacific jet along with a gulf jet collided ahead of the strong cold front. Strong Instability, Off the charts shear, lift, and great moisture return were all present. Several F3 and F4 tornadoes hit the area of Mid TN

One of the most damaging tornadoes in Mid TN was Putnam County. A tornado formed around Macedonia. This tornado rapidly booked to the northeast across SE outskirts of Cookeville. It went though the Upper Cumberland Regional Airport before entering the Poplar Grove area. There it crossed I-40 between Rocky Springs and Sand Springs before crossing the north outskirts of Monterey and moving ton Fentress County along the Green Pond and Hanging Limb areas.

One hit in Fentress County NE of a town called Obey City to just Se of Jamestown. In a subdivision to the south of Jamestown 50 homes were completely demolished. 7 deaths occurred

In Pickett County the Moodyville area suffered 5 deaths with houses demolished.

In Livingston TN 2 tornadoes struck the town of Livingston. One of them was an F1 the most devastating one was an F3 that destroyed a good deal of the buildings in the town and killed 3 people.

The most devastating one was an upper end F4 originally an F5 but changed to an upper end F4 in Lincoln and Franklin counties in TN. another F4 hit the same area after the first F4 struck the area causing homes to be destroyed foundation and all. it started around Vantown along AL border. one F4 went into Flintville the other to a mile to the east so after. the town of Lexie TN got hit by two F4's back to back and was devastated. Than one F4 went more NE into the Arnold AFB. into Coffee county. the other smacked into Estill Springs and finally came to rest in Woods Reservoir.

The first one that came from Alabama is the most devasting one and the deadliest Mid TN tornado. Origanally it was rated a F5 but upon investigation was changed to a upper end of F4.
