5 out of 5 lake day for a Monday

5 out of 5 lake day for a perfect weekday lake adventure. too bad it is a Monday.

Saturday, May 30, 2009

Pros and cons of severe.

slight risk of severe wx from Marion KY to Fredonia KY to Hopkinsville KY east. 20-30% chance of thunderstorms 40% up towards Henderson. Overall a pretty good lake day. Lake day confidence of 4 out of 5 south of Eddyville and 3 out of 5 north of there still exists. 5 is the best and 1 is the worst.

Severe wx list. Very low confidence with severe storms in the 1-2 range on confidence level.
Cons:
- Low Dewpoints
- No real good lifting mechanism
- Still the better shear is separated with the best instability.

Pros:
- Moderate Shear
- Decent Instability and sunshine

Expected: A few storms could from in NW KY and move southeast towards Central KY these produce mostly hail/wind but an isolated tornado couldn't be totally ruled. A MCS may or may not form.

Lake forecast and rivers for tommorow.

Tomorrow lake day forecast.

Ohio River from Cairo IL to Owensboro (Confidence Level of 3 out of 5 for a good lake day) Some storms could form in the afternoon and become severe. Overall defiantly not a washout and some good river and lake action will be had.

Land Between the Lakes. Confidence Level of 3 out of 5 from Eddyville north and 4 out of 5 from Eddyville KY South. (Lesser chance of storms closer to the TN border but still a low chance, could be a severe storm forming up towards Grand River no washout expected. If it was'nt for the SPC slight risk it would be a picture perfect lake day instead of a good lake day with uncertainites.

Slight Risk for West KY tommorow

A lot of uncertainties in Tomorrow. It isn't a perfect lake day as some storms could form and some can be severe. First we need a cap to break to allow for some storms to form than we need good instability. Than line segments with damaging wind potential could form also isolated tornadoes and large hail could form if super cells can form.

A SPC slight risk is in effect for Marion KY to Gallatin TN line east.

Pretty good lake weather for the most part.

Friday a day with calm winds, temps in the 79-83 range, and sunny skies

Lake Confidence of a 5 out of 5 for today for all of West KY.

Wednesday, May 27, 2009

Some strong storms possible.

Strong storms possible in West KY some with up to nickel size hail is possible.

Slight Risk for parts of West KY today.

Memorial Day has same Lake Confidence Level

It is that day Memorial Day. Rain appears to be more widespread but overall this appears to be a type of day with a pretty high (70-90) of rain unlike Sunday like I hoped for more hit or miss activity is expected. Since the lake day isn't expected to be a total loss and Confidence level of 3 will be given.

Confidence Levels (5 best) (1 worst)

LBL (parts of Trigg, Marshall, Calloway, Lyon, and Livingston counties) 3 (Thunderstorms could become very widespread but the day is not expected to be a washout)

Green River (from Calhoun to Rochester KY) 3 (Thunderstorms could become very widespread but the day is not expected to be a washout)

Lake Malone (parts of Todd, Muhlenberg, Logan counties) 3 (Scattered Thunderstorms could lead locally heavy rain and some crappy lake time, but not a total washout.)

Miss River (from Cairo IL to Hickman KY) 3 (Thunderstorms could become very widespread but the day is not expected to be a washout)

Ohio River (from Cairo IL to Smithland KY) 3 (Thunderstorms could become very widespread but the day is not expected to be a washout)

Ohio River (from Smithland KY to Owensboro KY) 3(Scattered Thunderstorms could lead locally heavy rain and some crappy lake time, but not a total washout )

Updates

Washout expected though 1pm will a band of moderate to heavy rain. Than after 1pm it is just scattered stuff and then you will get plenty of breaks to enjoy the lakes due to this break it is still a confidence level of 3 out of 5.

Saturday, May 23, 2009

Sunday May 24th lake day outlook

Sunday May 24th continues the Memorial Day Weekend fun. Rain appears to be more widespread but overall this appears to be a type of day with a pretty high (60-70%) of rain where most everyone will get rain, but it will have breaks in it and become more scattered so while everyone could get rain it won't be a total loss.

First Lake Day Outlook for Saturday May 23rd

Saturday May 23rd the first big time lake day for many. Boating adventures, Fishing adventures, and fun times as Memorial Day weekend kicks off. On both rivers and the Land between the Lakes fun times are to be had. Scattered thunderstorms might try to ruin the party, but luckily it shouldn't be a widespread event so don't cancel those lakes and river events, but keep an eye to the sky for some non-severe thunderstorms.

Confidence Levels (5 best) (1 worst)

LBL (parts of Trigg, Marshall, Calloway, Lyon, and Livingston counties) 3 (Scattered Thunderstorms could lead locally heavy rain and some crappy lake time, but not a total washout.)

Green River (from Calhoun to Rochester KY) 3 (Scattered Thunderstorms could lead locally heavy rain and some crappy lake time, but not a total washout.)

Lake Malone (parts of Todd, Muhlenberg, Logan counties) 3 (Scattered Thunderstorms could lead locally heavy rain and some crappy lake time, but not a total washout.)

Miss River (from Cairo IL to Hickman KY) 3 (Scattered Thunderstorms could lead locally heavy rain and some crappy lake time, but not a total washout. Also some minor flooding is occuring on the Miss. River)

Ohio River (from Cairo IL to Smithland KY) 3 (Scattered Thunderstorms could lead locally heavy rain and some crappy lake time, but not a total washout. Also some minor flooding is occuring on the Ohio)

Ohio River (from Smithland KY to Owensboro KY) 4

Expriemental Lake Day Outlook for today

This is an experimental Lake Day Outlook on what today's would of looked like. I will try to get tonight's the first official one out by 10pm tonight, and update it by noon that day if it needs any updates. If a 3 or lower is issued a reason will be beside it.

FRIDAY MAY 22nd- Forecast some isolated showers and t-storms might develop throughout the day across West KY, but will stay very isolated overall a good lake day. Temperatures are in the low to mid 80's with a calm east wind. parts of the Ohio and Miss. River are under minor flooding.

Cofidence Levels (5 best) (1 worst)
LBL (parts of Trigg, Marshall, Calloway, Lyon, and Livingston counties) 4
Green River (from Calhoun to Rochester KY) 4
Lake Malone (parts of Todd, Muhlenberg, Logan counties) 4
Miss River (from Cairo IL to Hickman KY) 3 (some minor flooding of farmland)
Ohio River (from Cairo IL to Smithland KY) 3 (some minor flooding of farmland)
Ohio River (from Smithland KY to Owensboro KY) 4

Starting Tommorow!! The West KY Lakes Forecast

A new idea for lakes season starting for tomorrow's lake's forecast. I will use the confidence level forecast that I use for winter wx, severe wx, flash flooding, etc. Except it will be used for how confident I am for a great lake day. This will be used for all of West KY. Including the popular Land in Between the Lakes area. Also could be used for surrounding smaller ponds or lakes around West KY. River conditions for events on the river will also be used. I will post an experimental one for how it would work for today.

What Makes a Great Lake Day

- Sunny and clear days. Many late spring and summer days have at least a 20% of summer time heat of time isolated showers. Usually unless there is a organized low it isn't an all day event. Of course on days were are washouts expected are you 1 or 2 days.
- Lack of severe thunderstorms- This goes along with the first one. Since KY severe wx season is Apr-Jun and May and June are prime lake months this can be an important one. SPC outlooks assign risks Slight, Moderate, and High for potential for severe weather. Any time a Moderate or High Risk is assigned expect a lake day rating no higher than 3 for a Moderate and 2 for a High. As damaging winds especially can become big time Lake hazards. Also Tornadoes and Hail if it is forecasted can mess up great lake day.
- Lack of High and Gusty Wind (non thunderstorm) High Wind days can be bad news for the lake days. These days can disrupt fishing, cause boating and swimming hazards, knock down weak limbs and in extreme cases entire trees, and if the ground is really dry can cause wild and brush fires. NWS for lake season issues Lake Wind Advisories for 35MPH gust or higher or when 25mph is sustained. Some high wind events a Wind Advisory or High Wind Watch or Warning may be issued. This can really lower the lake rating even if the day is expected to be clear.
- Warm day but not extreme heat days (days were high index values are expected to be over 105) Of course coming into the summer days will be hot. I am not talking about days that are in the low 90's with little humidity. Or typical hot summer days what could be hazardous even to a lake day is these days were the heat index (what the temperature feels like to you combining the temperature with humidity) is around or over 105 degrees, or those triple digit days where being out and overworking yourself is dangerous to your health. These dangerous temperatures can even make a lake day sticky and dangerous. When a Heat Advisory or Excessive Heat Warning is in effect expect no better than a 3 for a Heat Advisory and 2 for a Excessive Heat Warning on the lake day rating scale. Also if the temperature is forecasted to be under 72 degrees than that is a horrible lake day and will probably have a 2 or 3 rating at best.

5- Very confident to near certain of a great lake day (best rating)
1- Very great chance of a total ruined lake day this is a day you might as well stay home for. (worst rating)
The rating goes from 5 to 1. 1 is worst possible day as far as confidence in a good lake day. 5 is the best possible day as far as confidence of a good lake day.

One more night of blackberry winter.

A little frost possible cannot be totally ruled out in shelter and outlying areas of West KY. Mid TN does has a frost advisory out in which temps will be in the mid to upper 30's in some areas.

It is not uncommon to have frost all the way into early May, but at least no freezing temperatures are expected but with temps in the 38 to 42 range in West KY it will be cold. It will warm up 25 to 40 degrees as temps shot up into the mid to upper 70's by afternoon.

Sunday, May 17, 2009

A little blackberry tonight and not the phone

http://kyclim.wku.edu/factSheets/folklore.htm

A little blackberry winter tonight. With lows forecasted in the 39 to 42 range. A NE wind and temperatures not getting cold enough should prevent frost. Some sensitive plants in outlying areas may need to be covered though.

What is a Derecho

Derechos are very powerful windstorms. They appear as bowed out squall lines and can travel for over 400 miles and produce upwards to 135 MPH Winds. Damaging Winds are the main threat with these, but they can contain large hail and isolated tornadoes.

There are types of Derechoes: Serial (a long bowed out squall line with supercells and many bow echos ex: Memorial Day Weekend 2004, and West Virgina Derecho of 1991, and April 2nd 2006 also produce the most tornadoes along with damaging winds), Progressive (a narrow bow echo or group of small bow echos but can travel for long distances es: July 13th 2004 and May 5th 1996 Derecho. This one we are under the threat is a progressive), and Hybrid( cross between both of them and quite rare Southern Great Lakes Derecho of 1998 and maybe Texas Boaters Derecho of May 1987).

They are dangers to boaters, people in moblie homes, and anyone outside because they can produce hurricane force winds.

There are some links.

May 6th 2003 6 years Ago

FROM NWS PAH

This is the 6th year anniversary of the May 6th 2003 Tornado Outbreak. In which 10 separate tornadoes occurred in West KY. Luckily none were greater than F2. The biggest tornado was a F2 that passed just to the north of Wickliffe KY and damaged several houses in the area. That supercell moved all the way from SE MO to Cairo IL and produced tornadoes from Ballard County to McCracken and Graves County into Marshall County with the last tornado touchdown ending near Kentucky Lake.

Also a distarous F4 occured just north of West KY across Far South IL killing 2 and injuring 33. In which several homes were totally wiped out across the area.

Over 11 tornadoes occured on May 4th of this year along with one of the most damaging hailstorms in West KY history. Also on the early morning of May 11th a f3 tornado occured in Sacremento in McLean County.

Several hail and wind reports occured on other days from May 1st till the 15th as part of the very active and historic 2003 Tornado Outbreak Sequence that sweeped the nation from the Rockies to the East Coast.

May 2nd Overlook

Flash Flood Watch continues for West KY.

Friday, May 1, 2009

Washout Weekend.

Heavy rain is expected from today to Monday Morning. Rainfall amounts of 2 to isolated amounts as high as 6 to 7 inches may occur from this morning heavy rains that dumped 1 to 3 inches to more rain that is expected tonight and tomorrow. To other periods of heavy rain that are expected from Saturday Night which is Prom Night for many highschoolers to Sunday Night. These heavy rain events could aggravate any flooding issues. The maps from HPC and my own map are from today to Monday Morning.

Remeber that all of West KY is under a Flash Flood Watch so turn around and don't drowm.

Even these heavy rain events could make it to Louisville so it appears that a wet one is in store for the derby.

...A FLASH FLOOD WATCH WILL BE IN EFFECT FROM THIS EVENING
THROUGH MONDAY MORNING...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN PADUCAH HAS ISSUED A FLASH FLOOD
WATCH FOR PARTS OF SOUTHEAST MISSOURI...SOUTHERN ILLINOIS...
WEST KENTUCKY...AND SOUTHWEST INDIANA.

* THE POTENTIAL FOR HEAVY RAINFALL AND FLOODING WILL PERSIST
THROUGH THE WEEKEND. ADDITIONAL RAINFALL AMOUNTS OF TWO TO FIVE

PORTIONS OF WESTERN KENTUCKY... SOUTHEAST MISSOURI AND FAR
