Strong to Severe storms possible Thursday

Strong to severe storms may form into KY and TN Thursday. It is a low confidence forecast right now but will mention more details tomorrow as key of warm front is the main key.

Overview of the March 28th event

Corydon is cleaning up after a EF3 tornado did damage to 60 homes. They are fixing any siren issues, and all picking up the pieces.

From the fierce storms was a challenging forecast. The triple point where a warm air mass, occluded front, and cold front formed was focal point for severe storms in this event in West KY. With an MCS in S GA and FL blocking moisture it was a tough forecast had that MCS not been there conditions may of been much worse. Sunlight and destabilization allowed a narrow band of 750 to 1000 CAPE to form to the triple point, and with great shear and dynamics the storms exploded and started to rotate.

Both tornadoes the EF-1 in Union and the EF-3 in East Union into Henderson county both had tornado warnings in effect for them.

Also several large hail reports and some isolated wind damage reports were also recieved.

Good thoughts

A Tornado Watch is in effect. The main threat here is large hail but with the shear downbursts and isolated tornadoes cannot be ruled out. The shear may tear up several storms. Still watch out for any warnings that you may get.

Tornado Watch coming soon

SPC said a Tornado Watch is likely with supercells possible. In the next hour. Beware and watch out for severe weather. Large Hail, Damaging Winds, and Isolated Tornadoes are the main threats.

http://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/md/md0318.html

Mar 28th

A very uncertain severe weather threat. Evidence is mounting for a bust still a triple point may produce a supercell with hail, wind, and damaging wind potential.

Friday, March 27, 2009

Severe threat March 28th

A complex situation here. A strong low pressure system will move along the Ohio River across parts of West KY. With incredible shear present in this situation. If higher CAPES can reach into the Triple Point than tornadoes are possible esp in the Hopkinsville/Elkton/Cadiz/Greenville. The Main Threat is Large Hail and Damaging Winds.

Advantages
- Great Shear
- Triple point is near or in West KY

Disadvantages
- Timing could come in the morning hours
- Cloud cover and rain could hamper instability
- Moisture may not recover and inflow may be blocked from storms in the Deep South.

All and all this could be an dangerous event even for West KY if things do like they could go.

Another thought

Something that could make the West KY threat more dangerous. Is something called a triple point (cold front, warm front intersection, sometimes with another boundary) may move across the area late tomorrow morning into early afternoon hours. If it can make it into the area say around the 11am-4pm range there may even be an tornado threat if a supercell can form in this triple point. So do watch out for it. This is a low confidence forecast so far but it is defiantly a possible scenario that could increase our severe weather chances for Saturday.

Severe threat/High wind pushed to Saturday

Thursday, March 26, 2009

Not as Dangerous As once thought but still a threat for Mid TN

In Mid TN. Isolated Tornadoes are possible along the TN/AL border. For tomorrow night. Large Hail and Damaging Winds for the rest of Mid TN from after 10PM until Saturday.

There could be an enhanced severe threat over SE Mid TN early Saturday Afternoon in which large hail, damaging wind, and isolated tornadoes are possible but it is a low confidence forecast for now.

Update Confidence Levelso

An active weekend system is expected to move across West KY and IL Friday Night though Midday Saturday. Damaging Winds, Large Hail, Locally Heavy Rain, Non Thunderstorm High Gradient Winds are the main threats. The main kicker is moisture in South MS, South AL, and South GA, and FL may cut off some good inflow keeping instability low kinda like during the March 27th 2005 event. If that doesn't happen severe weather can make it to West KY.

Wednesday, March 25, 2009

Tuesday, March 24, 2009

Updated Confidence Level Map.

Just click on the map for a larger image.

Locally Heavy Rain tonight

Locally heavy rain amounts of 1 to 3 inches is possible in West KY. Some ponding on low water crossings is possible but expect some rain, lightning, and maybe a brief strong to severe wind gust.

March 23rd Outlook

Some strong to isolated severe storms are possible late this evening into tonight mostly West of the lakes where brief damaging wind gusts can't be ruled out.

Today Non Thunderstorm winds could gust 40 to 50MPH from the south.

Later on a very complex and dangerous system could bring heavy rain and severe weather to Western Kentucky Fri Evening- Early Sat Morning (4PM Friday- 4am Saturday) shear is impressive and instability and moisture return appear pretty sufficient with dew points into the 60's and CAPES over 1000 across pretty much most of West KY. Even areas of 1500 to 2000CAPE can't be ruled out across parts of KY and TN. More later on on this potential severe weather outbreak.

Monday, March 23, 2009

Slight risk of Severe wx from Paducah to Fulton KY West Tommorow.

A slight risk of severe storms tomorrow and early tomorrow night is possible from Paducah to Fulton west. The main threat is brief heavy rain, lightning, and maybe some damaging winds. Will watch it and early tomorrow will have updated confidence level maps. Wind gusts near 35 to 39MPH may also be present with the storm.

Also Fri Night/Saturday we will have to watch another system that could be strong winds, severe weather, and heavy rain.

March 23rd I been kind of slacking

1 year ago a Flood Event

A very sig. and historic flood event occurred in MO,IL, and IN. West KY wasn't hit as hard but still got hit pretty hard. 2 to 6 inches of rain feel in the area with 5 to 6 inches from Arlington KY to Henderson/Owensboro areas. A state of emergency was declared in Henderson county as boat rescues had to occur on the night of March 18th and early March 19th 2008. Parts of US 60 were closed esp in Union and Henderson counties. Main roads in Carlisle County were closed, and Owensboro experienced some major urban and street flooding. Flooding effects occurred though March 21st and minor to moderate flooding of Ohio, Mississippi, and Green Rivers closed some highways and threatened low land homes.

Although not as bad as to the NW about 1 million dollars of damage occurred in West KY.

YOUR NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE (NWS) INVITES YOUR PARTICIPATION IN
ITS ANNUAL NATIONAL FLOOD SAFETY AWARENESS WEEK...MARCH 16-20 2009.

TODAYS THEME IS FLOODING AND RELATED PHENOMENA. FLOODS OCCUR
NATIONWIDE AND ARE THE DEADLIEST WEATHER RELATED KILLER IN THE
UNITED STATES. FLOODING CAN BE CAUSED BY A VARIETY OF WEATHER
HAZARDS INCLUDING TROPICAL CYCLONES...LOW PRESSURE SYSTEMS...
THUNDERSTORMS...SNOWMELT...AND DEBRIS FLOWS. THE IMPACTS OF FLOODING
CAN RANGE FROM RIVER FLOODING...TO URBAN FLOODING...TO FLASH
FLOODING. NO MATTER WHAT TYPE OF FLOODING IS OCCURRING IT IS LIFE
THREATENING...SO STAY INFORMED OF DEVELOPING SITUATIONS AND BE
PREPARED TO TAKE QUICK ACTION TO AVOID DANGER.

HERE ARE SOME TERMS THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE USES TO CONVEY THE
FLOOD THREAT:

- A FLOOD WATCH OR FLASH FLOOD WATCH INDICATES THAT CONDITIONS ARE
FAVORABLE FOR FLOODING TO HAPPEN.

- A FLOOD WARNING OR FLASH FLOOD WARNING MEANS FLOODING IS OCCURRING
OR IMMINENT.

- MINOR FLOODING IS WHEN MINIMAL OR NO PROPERTY DAMAGE IS EXPECTED
TO OCCUR...BUT THE FLOODING COULD POSSIBLY CAUSE SOME PUBLIC
THREAT.

- MODERATE FLOODING IS WHEN SOME INUNDATION OF STRUCTURES AND ROADS
NEAR STREAMS AND RIVERS OCCURS. SOME EVACUATIONS OF PEOPLE OR
TRANSFERRING PROPERTY TO HIGHER GROUND MAY BE NEEDED.

- MAJOR FLOODING IS WHEN THERE IS EXTENSIVE INUNDATION OF STRUCTURES
AND ROADS ALONG WITH POSSIBLE SIGNIFICANT EVACUATIONS OF PEOPLE
AND PROPERTY TO HIGHER GROUND.

Back in St Patrick's Day 1892

Memphis and Nashville had a twenty-four hour record snowfall on March 17th 1892. With 17 inches the most ever for Nashville and that still stands today. Train travel and community activities were shut down in a very widespread and wicked late season snowfall. Even West KY more than likely had widespread 10"+ snowfall.

Good luck finding the Four Leaf Clovers in 1892

Happy St. Patrick's Day.

Some locally dense fog again tonight

Some locally dense fog tonight that has been around for a few days could return.

Scary tornado stats this decade across West KY

Map below is of F2/EF 2 or above torandoes this decade in West KY With this being severe weather month I thought I would share with you some pretty alarming trends looking at NCDC and PAH archives about West KY.

Esp. So far this decade. Typically West KY looking at trends from 1950 West KY averages around 4 tornadoes a year of any strength and the chance of those being strong or violent is pretty low.

I heard on radio and on new era that West Ky is one of the most dangerous places in the country for strong to violent tornadoes even beating out some areas of TX, OK, KS, and NE this decade.

Even though we still trail them in overall tornado number a higher percent of our tornadoes we get are F/EF 2 and above. West KY has had to date this decade with 9 more months to go a whooping 105 tornadoes (38 are EF2 or above 37 F/EF2's and 3's and 1 F4)

Daviess and Webster have had 5 EF2 or higher tornadoes since 1/3/2000.

Hopkins and Critteden have had 4 tornadoes so far this decade that were EF2/F2 or above.

Christian, Calloway, and Mclean have had 3 tornadoes so far this decade that were EF2 or above. Other counties had 0 to 2.

Only Hickman, Fulton, Carlisle, McCracken, Graves, and Union counties are the only counties to not of had an EF2/F2 or above tornado so far this decade.

Four Rivers Severe Weather Symposium

http://www.crh.noaa.gov/news/display_cmsstory.php?wfo=pah&storyid=22595&source=0

NWS PAH is announcing the Four Rivers Severe Weather Symposium. The link above is from the NWS Paducah about the event and the schedule of the events.

It will be hosted in John A. Logan College in Carterville IL just outside of Marion IL.

Talks about the Tri-State Tornado, Nocturnal/Cool Season Tornado Outbreaks, and a lesson learned on Storm Chasing lecture will be available.

It is free of charge but CJ's Bus will be there to accept toy donations. These are donated toys that CJ's bus will give to tornado victims this is a great cause.

Tornado Facts and Maps

^^ Tornadoes in this decade alone so far ^^
^^ Tornadoes from (1950-Present)
- West KY has had 105 out of 216 tornadoes occur in the 2000's alone so far.
- 2003 has had the most tornadoes of any year in West KY history
- Calloway County not only has the overall lead in tornadoes in West KY since 1950 (22), but has also had the most tornadoes since 2000 (11) in West KY.
- Daviess County is second in both tornadoes since 1950 (17) and tornadoes since 2000 (10)
- So far Daviess and Calloway county are in double digits in the number of tornadoes they have received since 2000,but if Crittenden or Webster County receives one more tornado this year they will be in double digits for this decade. Fulton County is the only county in the west ky 22 that has not had a tornado so far this decade.
- Overall Carlisle County has the least amount of tornadoes since 1950 with only one, and that was a brief F-0 with the connection of two outflow boundaries back in Aug 2006.
- These maps and info talk about all tornadoes (F/EF0-F/EF5)
- West KY 22 even going back to the 1800's has not had an F5 tornado yet even though there were a few that occurred close by like the Tri-State Tornado (SE MO, S IL, S IN) and the Bradenburg Tornado in North Central KY during the 1974 Super Outbreak.

"By Julia Hunter, New Era Staff Writer
Published: Friday, March 13, 2009 11:40 PM CDT
Meteorologist Rick Shanklin can’t predict what tornado season will look like this year, but he can say with almost certainty that this region will likely see the worst of it.

“We have had among the highest frequency of strong and violent tornadoes this decade than anywhere in the nation,” Shanklin told the New Era in a recent interview.

Shanklin, a Hopkinsville native, works in the National Weather Service’s Paducah office, which covers 58 counties in southeast Missouri, southern Illinois, southwest Indiana and western Kentucky.

Although the highest frequency of tornadoes previously occurred near the Great Plains area, commonly referred to as “tornado alley,” Shanklin said that since the turn of the century, the tornado region has shifted east, encompassing western Kentucky.

Shanklin said the peak season for tornadoes is April, May and June, with most occurring in May.

“We average about half of all tornadoes we get year round in those three months,” Shanklin said.

The Paducah Warning Area sees an average of about 22 tornadoes a year, which is about one tornado every three years within a given county, he said.

Of all the counties in the warning area, Calloway, Christian and Hopkins counties are most prone to tornadoes, Shanklin said. Shanklin said the location is favorable because of its geography and proximity to the Gulf of Mexico and Canada.

“Those features can help yield more unstable air mass environments and stronger winds throughout the atmosphere.

Still, Shanklin said tornadoes are difficult to predict. As far as he can tell, nothing indicates that the season will produce a particularly large number of storms.

“It only takes one strong weather system to move through the area, though,” he said.

Shanklin said particularly during the next several months it’s important for people to be prepared for these storms.

Shanklin said of the 38 tornado fatalities the Paducah Warning Area has seen in the last 13 years, 34 of them occurred at night.

This is why, he said, it’s important to have a weather radio — and to use it properly.

Kelli Keller’s Happy Hollow Road home was heavily damaged during the April 2006 tornado, said since then her family has upgraded their weather radio. The never turn it off.

“It will wake you up. That’s the point of those,” Keller said.

Martha Marcum lived on Gilkey Lane next to the Sinking Fork Baptist Church in the April 2006 tornado. As soon as she and her husband moved back into their home after two months of repair, they bought a weather radio. They didn’t own one before the storm.

She also said she’s started to watch the weather reports and be much more cautious.

Shanklin said it’s important to have a “designated weather watcher” in each home to keep up with weather reports daily, especially during a tornado watch.

Keller said another thing she learned from the tornado was not to try to out-run it.

“I actually did something that nobody should do,” she said. “I jumped into my car and flew out of (the area). If I would have gone the other direction, I would have driven right into it.

Keller said she later discovered that the tornado struck near her home about 20 seconds later.

“Now that it’s happened, I see the power of just weather and natural disasters,” Keller said. “It can destroy everything you’ve got in a matter of seconds and it can take your life.

Snow is falling

East of the Lakes and South of West KY Parkway and most of Mid TN snow will continue it may mix with sleet. With heavier bands I wouldn't rule out an inch or two in West KY around Cadiz, Murray, Hopkinsville, Greenville, and Elkton areas over towards Bowling Green.

Also in Mid TN A winter WX Advisory is on till Midnight. Snow north of I-40 could accumulate 1 to 2 inches along with sleet. 1/2 to 1 inch of snow and some minor ice accumulations are possible south of I-40 and the Nashville metro area.

Mar 12

Wednesday, March 11, 2009

Why does the last March for Winter have to be so complex?

A low confidence event is unfolding. With slight overrunning occurring a system can move across the Mid South. This will cause snow to mix with the rain and even a little sleet and freezing rain. Right now advisories are issued for West TN and parts of West Mid TN as moisture doesn't seem to be abundant in this situation. This is a situation in which the most intense moisture is in the warm sector.

A lot of uncertainties in how much and if any bands of wintry precipitation can form. With models going more northwards and with less moisture in the colder part of the storm.

It appears that accumulations of snow and sleet 1 to 2 inches thick and up to 1/10 inch of ice are possible in the advisory in West TN and NW Mid TN

With up to 1/2 to 1 inch of snow and sleet in West KY south of the West KY Parkway and flurries and light snow showers with probably nothing more than dusting north of that.

In this complex situation big time surprises can happen and Tomorrow we will see if this threat still exists or if a big time surprise occurred.

Slight Risk for March the 8th

There is a slight risk of severe storms for tomorrow. Storm threats include large hail, damaging winds, and even isolated tornadoes can't be ruled out.

Storms should develop as a low pressure system hits the great lakes area. This will move a cold front into TN. This cold front will eventually move back up into the area as a warm front by Monday as the front isn't that strong. We will have to watch this front again Tues/Tues Night.

With this there is enough shear and forcing to develop thunderstorms some as bow echos and supercells for tomorrow afternoon and early evening. Beware of the chance of severe weather with this system.
