WPSD Local 6 list of road closures in the area

http://www.wpsdlocal6.com/news/local/Area-road-closures-available-online-118396604.html
From WPSD Channel 6 with an updated list of road closures by county across Western KY.

Lyon County information

http://www.facebook.com/LyonCounty
You can add Lyon County to get more information on the road conditions in this area.
93 south is shut down in Lyon County due to the road collapse. This is why it is important not to drive through flooded roadways. If you can't see the road there is no way to even know that it is there. Sinkholes in this karst territory will also be an issue due to the amount of limestone in this area mixed in with the heavy rain

Survey Said

http://www.crh.noaa.gov/product.php?site=PAH&issuedby=PAH&product=PNS&format=CI&version=1&glossary=0
Surveys for several West KY communities included

EF-2 hit Bardwell KY back on the 23rd. Several tornadoes also occurred on the 25th and 26th some may even be surveyed on the 24th and 22nd as well.

Ohio River at Cairo

The Ohio River at Cairo IL which impacts Ballard, Carlisle, Hickman, and Fulton Counties is soon expected to reach record flood stage. At this gauge levels will be higher than 1937. Some huge flooding potentials here.

From WPSD and KY Transpotation Cabinet

From the KY Transporation Cabinet: Water is inching up on US 60 at the Crittenden-Union Co. Line. The Tradewater River Bridge at this site was replaced and the approaches raised in the late 1970's. As a result water hasn't been over the road in recent memory. That means there is no history to predict what river level will put floodwaters over the road at this site. Traffic may be restricted to one lane later today.

River Flooding update

Dangerous River Flooding is occurring. The crest should come sometime this week along the Ohio, Mississippi, and Green Rivers. Massive sandbag operations are going on in Ballard, Livingston, and McCracken Counties. Moderate to Major Flooding is occurring along Union, Crittenden, Daviess, Henderson along the Ohio River. Ballard, Carlisle, Hickman, and Fulton along the Mississippi River. Muhlenberg, Mclean, and Webster along the Green River. Flooding is occurring along the Lake levels due to discharge to help relief the stress of the Ohio River. Turn around and do not drown.

This is a River Flooding Emergency for these areas especially for Ballard, McCracken, and Livingston County.

News about flooding

WPSD-TV
Livingston County Emergency Management is currently asking residents who live along the river in Livingston County to evacuate their homes by 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 27th

Also turn around don't drown. Don't cross any flooded roads and beware if traveling tonight because flooding is hard to see at nighttime. A lot of times you are not aware you are on a flooded road till it is too late. So drive safe and be aware.

Major Event set up

Concern is building that this is just the beginning of what looks like a long and drawn out historical weather event. Flash Flooding, River Flooding, and Severe Weather are all likely from tonight all the way into Wednesday. This event has already caused Ballard and more then likely other counties to go ahead and declare a State of Emergency.

Some reports already have occurred.

- A tornado just west of Crofton was reported in North Christian County earlier today.

- An EF-2 tornado occurred in Poole(Webster County) late Friday Night.

- US 62 and US 60 are impassable at several points across Northwest KY.

- Evacuations are already underway in Marshall, Livingston Counties and more than likely several other counties.

- Bardwell KY and Ballard/McCracken Counties have also received storm damage the past few nights.

What is expected

- Continuing training rain tonight to increase the flood threat.

- A chance of severe weather tonight, Monday Night, Tuesday, Tuesday Night, and Wednesday. Some of these events could be severe weather outbreaks. The worst severe weather may exist southward including West/Middle TN southward, but could still impact Western KY in a potentially major way.

- Severe Weather and Flash Flooding may occur in exactly the same area at the same time. Meaning EM crews may be unable to get to damage due to flooding.

- Snowmelt in the north, this event, the heavy rain we had since Feb. and a Flooding MS River will combine for a historic apocalyptic River Flooding event along the Ohio and MS rivers.

What you need to do.

- Get prepared now across all of Western KY prepare for flooding, tornadoes, damaging winds, and communities along the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers need to prepare for an extended flooding event along the rivers that could be devastating.

Stay tuned to local media, NWS, Noaa WX Radio, or other sources throughout this trying and historic event.

McCracken County KY is out of barricades to put on flooded roads.
- Flooding reports of impassable roads even in Hopkinsville KY and all across Western KY. Livingston County has to evacuate a trailer park.

Tornado Watch 181 is in effect for NW KY, or from areas along the Western KY Parkway/US 62 northward. This Tornado Watch is in effect till 1am.

River Flooding Concerns

There are growing concerns that River Flooding in the coming weeks could be major.

Conditions that set up the playing field.
- Well Above Average Precipitation since late February.
- Ongoing flooding in IL/IN.
- Ohio River is already in Minor to Moderate Flood State.
- A Mississippi River that is above flood state(prevents the Ohio River from emptying out excess water)
- A lot of excess groundwater in the area.
- Heavy Rain event this weekend and into next week.
- Combination of spring snow melt water and heavy rains across the Northern US which could help to contribute to the flooding.

There is potential for a Major Flooding event along the Ohio River. Depending on how heavy the rain is above the Ohio River and along the Ohio River determines how high the river will crest. Remember you don't really have to have heavy rain along the Ohio River if heavy flooding rains far in the drainage basin it will runoff to the Ohio River. Other rivers that lead to the Ohio in IL,IN,OH, and PA could contribute more runoff. A Mississippi River that is above flood stage prevents the Ohio River from emptying it's excess water. A major flood on the Ohio can spill into it's tributary the Mississippi.

Concern is for anyone who lives near the Ohio or Mississippi River or even a close tributary. Flash Flooding may also be an issue across NW KY tonight into tomorrow. Again Flash Flooding issues may also exist on Monday Night into Wednesday. River Flooding will more then likely be the bigger threat after all the rain that we get plus all the rain in the drainage basins drains into the Ohio and then the Mississippi Rivers. If you live in an area near the OH or MS river or a close tributary the time is now to prepare a disaster kit in case evacuation is necessary. Also like in the 2010 event areas near the lakes may also become flooded if TVA lets the Ohio River drain into the Land Between the Lakes area.

April 22nd Overview

- After this mornings rain clearing out will occur. Later in the evening towards the overnight hours more rounds of storms will occur. Flooding and Severe Weather are possible, the biggest threats will be in NW KY closer to the MS and Ohio Rivers, but all of Western KY is under a Slight Risk of Severe weather. Go to the NWS PAH homepage for more info on the Flash Flood Watch, which is highlighted on the map above.

Flooding Concerns?

Minor to Moderate River Flooding on the Ohio River currently. Concerns are growing for possible major flooding along the Ohio River due to the active rainfall period we are entering. By the middle of next week in excess of 5 inches of rain could fall along or just to the north of the Ohio River. Which will flow downstream and create more river flooding issues.

My thoughts from about 11pm. There is a good chance the area in the red will be under at least a Severe T-Storm Warning by 11pm. So take steps to prepare for severe weather.
- Very Large Hail and isolated tornadoes changing to a more wind dominant threat is expected.
- Keep NOAA's and Local Media in handy.
- A link list will be sent out for more updates to check on during the storm.

Tornado Watch for all of West KY

Tornado Watch for all of Western KY till 2am.

9pm-1:30am still appears right for the timeframe. Severe storms will wind damage and large hail history are in SE MO now moving eastward and northeastward.

Update

Storms now in Northern Arkansas and Southern Missouri are the storms we need to watch for West KY and NW Mid TN. Those storms have produce some very large hail, and could also produce damaging winds and isolated tornadoes. The line as long as nothing forms out ahead of it should approach far western KY in the next few hours.
Still timed as long as nothing forms out ahead of it for around 9:30ish. If stuff forms out ahead of the line the storms may fire in far West KY as early as 8:30pm. Should clear Western KY by 1:30-2am.

- A tornado watch will probably be necessary within the next few hours.

Timing Update

Update on Severe Weather

Still looks like a good threat of Severe Weather across Western KY. Possible Derecho(long lived bowed out squall line) means the wind threat is the greater threat. Isolated Tornadoes and Isolated Very Large Hail also possible. If storms could form out ahead of the line those will have the higher tornado/very large hail threat. Still uncertainties on whether storms will form out ahead of the main line or not. Timing appears to be quicker if storms form out ahead of the main line far Western KY can begin to see severe weather as early as 8pm. Have to make timing earlier say 8:00(to account for any storms ahead of the line.) The line itself may enter areas along the MS and Ohio River by 10pm, and then especially if it is fast moving actually clear out of Christian, Todd KY, and Henry TN by 3am.

A threat for late Tuesday

An active severe weather event is looking more and more likely to strike the Central US and Ohio Valley on Tuesday and Tuesday Night. Western Kentucky is included in this threat so we need to watch it carefully. Prayers and thoughts sent to the Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, North Carolina, Virginia storm victims.

An EF-0 and an EF-1 Tornado did minor damage mostly to trees in Trigg County last night.

About Last Night

Last night some severe weather did occur but luckily no real serious damage or any injuries happened across Western Kentucky. There were some quarter to golfball size hail reported, and a funnel cloud reported from Cadiz to Nortonville with no touchdown reported.

Areas of Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Alabama were not so lucky so keep those people in your thoughts and prayers.

Another threat of strong to severe storms and heavy rain is possible on Tuesday Night, but it is too early to go into the exact details of that threat. Overall the pattern appears warm, wet, and stormy throughout the last half of April heading into May.

Friday, April 15, 2011

April 14th update

Click to enlarge. Confidence Level of Severe storms- 3 out of 5. Confidence Level of Flooding- 1 out of 5. Confidence Level of Non-Thunderstorm Winds- 3 out of 5.

Storm Update

Severe storms are possible on Friday. Two rounds are expected a first round with some wind/hail threat in the mid-morning into the midday. Round two will depend on what happens with Round one, and how much clearing can occur and how far north the moisture transports.
If enough clearing occurs then storms that could produce very large hail, and damaging winds with some chance of an isolated tornado can be possible later in the afternoon after 2pm across Western Kentucky and the TN river area of Middle Tennessee. The best threat will be along the TN river/lakes area westward. If enough convective debris does occur after round 1 then the threat on Round 2 won't be as great.

April 14th overview

Active severe weather may occur especially to the south of the Western KY. In Western KY the jet energy is enough, with a gradually becoming unstable atmosphere to allow for severe storms to form during the day Friday.

Update time

70's tomorrow and Thursday for temperatures. More thunderstorms Friday and my fellow warm-loving, sun-shine friends Saturday won't be a good weather day.
- After the rainfall of yesterday we at least get a nice break for a few days. The next system down the pike is on Friday locally heavy rain, and thunderstorms are possible some of these may be strong or severe so we will need to watch those.

Sunday, April 10, 2011

Slight Risk of Severe Weather

A Slight Risk of Severe Weather for tonight into the wee morning hours of Monday from a line that extends from Murray to Owensboro westward. Slight Risk later in the morning for all of Middle Tennessee, and from a Cadiz to Greenville KY line southward. If storms go severe damaging winds would be the main threat in both cases. The main time-frame will be from 3am-9am for Western KY.

Overview for today

http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?map.x=291&map.y=200&site=pah&zmx=1&zmy=1

There is a Wind Advisory for the area today. With 45mph+ winds possible this afternoon and evening.

A slight risk of Severe WX exists from US 45 westward, with isolated to widely scattered damaging winds the main threat.

- Confidence level of Strong Storms east of US 45-to US 41- 2 out of 5
- Confidence level of Strong Non-Thunderstorm Winds- 4 out of 5

Look at the Greenville KY Storm, The Westward Rotation

- From the NWS of Paducah. The Greenville KY Storm

Rotation in this case, was on the backside of the Greenville KY storm. A lot of times the public, and even me sometimes(even though I should know better) look closer to the leading edge of the storm, or the south part of the storm for the rotation. In the case the rotation was on the western edge of the storm.

For radar observers the rotation isn't always on the south or southeast part of the storm, in this case where the favorable atmospheric winds are closer to the backside of the storm, the rotation and tornado formed on the western part of the storm.

http://forecast.weather.gov/wwamap/wwatxtget.php?cwa=pah&wwa=special%20weather%20statement

Not an April Fools Joke, a real threat looms

Showers today, the weekend turns very nice. The start of the week turns very nasty. A severe weather event is becoming likely for all of Western Kentucky, and Middle Tennessee during the daytime hours of Monday into the overnight hours of Monday. With Tater Day in Marshall County, and a possible big time college basketball game, this threat is of concern.
