Last update for West KY

Snow looks to clear west ky by midnight at least the moderate to heavier stuff. Flurries may linger until tomorrow morning.

Tomorrow morning will post on how West KY did.

Snow is the last of Feb.

More snow is reported. Can't get amounts in far west KY with them being in mdt to even heavy snow in that area can't rule out that a few inches occurred.

2 to 5 inches of snow is possible in Mayfield, Fulton, Clinton KY area. 1 to 3 elsewhere seems reasonable.

Update Time Man

Now the snow bands are moving towards Murray by tonigh moderate to heavy snow should move though West KY esp from a Marion to Livermore KY line south.

Total Snow Accumulations of 2 to 4 inches in the Murray/Mayfield/Fulton area. And 1 to 3 inches across most of West KY and 1 inch around Henderson and Owensboro is expected.

Sleet may mix in esp early

Far West KY Marches to the Snow Tune

Some good snow moderate to heavy snow even should move into far west KY. Areas into Fulton, Hickman, Bardwell, Mayfield should benefit first from the good snow.

Call maps right before the event

Enlarge for bigger details

A little something more to say

I think 1 to 2 inches of snow are possible across even NW KY. Esp. Since the bigger snow has been occurring in the north part of this system. As this system moves towards the mid south expect the moisture and radar to light up more. ANd heavy bands to really form. The snow could last 6 to 12 hours but some people may be in bands that produce 2 inches of snow a hour or hour and a half esp in west and west mid tn.

Rain and mix now in KY

With most areas in rain for west ky some sleet and maybe even a little snow could be mixing esp across NW KY. Main event is after 1PM once the rain changes to sleet and snow with the upper level low.

Battle March of Winter Weather

March and March away. We are one day form March and boy does it look to come like a lion.

An upper level low in Missouri will cross paths with a future nor' easter system and produce a dynamic cooling type snow across the Mid and Deep South. Snow is occuring and heavy snow in bands in MO. As the low dives along with the trough to the south and east it will meet up with another system. Eventually they will move up the coast and become a nor'easter system with big acculmations in the major cities of the NE in areas that haven't seen a good snow since Feb 2006.

This means that snow acculmation is possible across west ky. best chance near the MO and TN borders even up to an inch into Evansville Tri State can't be ruled out.

SO beware of the winter weather we may face.

Right now it looks like 1 to 2 inches across most of the advisory area with maybe an isolated 3 or 4 inch snowfall total towards Fulton and Mayfield.

Feb 27th update

Click picture to enlarge.

2 rounds of winter precipitation and an advisory for the first one for Calloway, Graves, Carlisle, Fulton, and Hickman counties. In which rain could change to frz rain and sleet with first batch tonight and tomorrow. 1/10 to 1/12 inch of ice is expected across this area which may cause issues on bridges and overpasses Tomorrow morning.

Beware of another round Sat. Afternoon and Night that I mentioned earlier which may produce an inch of snow and a little ice and rain. We could get ice and rain while everyone gets snow because a warm layer of air will stick around in West KY.

Snow Possible Tommorow and Tomm. Night

I can't resist there is snow forecasted for tomorrow and tomm. night.

First before I say what I am going to say know that the models that show this nice snow system have been poor at best, and that we have saw total model agreement go up in flames on the day of the event this past 2 winters so this event and any more that may occur in March will have a low confidence.

We will start as a trough digs into the southeast a low pressure system will form in South Alabama into South GA. This will cold air nearby will be moisture into TN and even into parts of West and Central KY not a lot of moisture but that is that main uncertainty. It may be enough to where bands of snow may form after the rain that will start tonight and tomorrow by model guidance the rain will change to snow by noon west of I-65 and by say 6pm east of I-65 if it doesn't change by those times or soon after than we will probably have to chalk up another bust event.

Tough part is not only when rain changes to snow but where a band of heavier snow may set up. This might be one of those events where a dusting might occur at your house but 10 miles down the road they have 5 inches of snow.

While nothing like March 2008 or March 1996 is expected it is late Feb/March where surprises can occur.

Right now for west ky esp south of the West KY Parkway 1 to 1 and a 1/2 inches of snow seems reasonable if things go as planned. If banding occurs could be locally more.

For Mid TN about 1 to 2 inches could occur but depending on some models and band may run across North TN from Springfield to Jamestown TN area down to the plateau and produce up to 4 inches of snow but that is very low confidence of now.

stay tuned for updates on this potential winter situation and enjoy as it could be the last winter storm chance of this winter.
maybe it will maybe it won't

Good link due to issues with debris the land between the lakes park is closed till April 1st.

Also a few areas esp in rural areas like Livingston, Ballard, and Crittenden counties are still without power.

Some Light Snow possible Tomm

Starting tommorow morning a clipper system will move across Western Kentucky. And produce a rain to snow event thoughout the day tommorow. The even should start late morning Saturday and clear West KY by sunset. Nothing sig. is expected but questions about how much moisture the system has and how quickly if the rain changes to snow will it start sticking the ground remains a mystery till the event. Like a PAH Special Weather Statement said 2 inches can't be ruled out this if occurs would more than likely occur along the US 60 corridor from Wickliffe to Paducah to Henderson/Owensboro and down towards towns like Providence and Calhoun. The closer you get to Nashville the lower the snow chances are.

feb 18

Also to mention the severe potenial esp in South Alabama there is a lot of uncertainity on how things will go down but a MDT risk is down in South Alabama. Alabama, Miss, GA, and South TN may have a rough day on thier hands.

Tuesday, February 17, 2009

Today is Feb. 17th

Hail in TN possible tonight?

Some storms with large hail are possible across Mid TN as a slight risk is in effect for hail in Middle TN for tonight. A small hail storm can't even be ruled out as far north as West KY so we will watch the hail threat to see the degree of it.

I'm Still here

Several Updates to go over

- Ef-1 Tornado was reported over Camp Ground area of Fentress County.
- Still several thousand people are without power in West KY. It might take till the first or even mid March to get everyone on for power. The High Wind Event didn't help matters here.
- Looking like some rain looks possible Wedensday. After a slight warmup Tuesday and Wednesday average winter temperatures should return Thursday and possibility into the end of the month.

Storm Recap

A High Wind Event we were concerned about did happen. Owensboro Kentucky had a gust of 73MPH the highest of this event. 10,000 new costumers lost power in Daviess County. In Reidland the roof was blown off a grocery store into the trees. Several roofs are gone across many areas of West KY. Even some metal siding in Hopkinsville Mall. Muhlenberg County all the people with power lost it. This made Ice Storm Recovery impossible today.

Also earlier a Tornado Watch was in effect for the Green River Counties of West KY. Some storms produced wind gusts of 60MPH and some minor damage was done 10 miles east of Hopkinsville but that was the extent of the line in West KY.

There was more damage in Central KY and Mid TN by thunderstorms. Even a possible Tornado or Downburst in Fentress down to Scoot County TN in the Plateau. NWS Nashville and for Scoot County NWS Morristown will explore that area tommorow.

Special Weather Statment from Paducah

... High Wind Warning remains in effect until 5 PM CST this
afternoon...

A High Wind Warning remains in effect until 5 PM CST this
afternoon.

Wind gusts of 50 to 60 mph will continue across the area through
4pm. The winds should decrease between 4pm and 5pm... then drop off
dramatically by early evening. The strongest winds are most
likely over western Kentucky... southeast Illinois... and southwest
Indiana. As of mid afternoon... there have been numerous reports of
wind gusts over 60 mph across the quad state area. This has
brought down trees and power lines... and there have been reports
of structural damage.

People heading home from school and work should be extremely
careful and watch for debris in the Road and downed power lines.

Loose limbs and weakened trees will continue to come down due to
the strong winds. The winds may result in new power outages for
some areas... and result in more property damage as well.

P

Warning factory continues

Muhlenberg and Todd Counties now under T-Storm Warnings will 70MPH reported so do not take these storms lightly

Also a Tornado Watch is in effect for the area until 5pm CST

More T-Storm Warnings

Henderson, Webster, Daviess, Mclean are now under a T-storm Warning as a squal line is really starting to take shape stay indoors and beware or rapidly changing conditions.
NWS has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Hopkins and Christian County till 11:25. This line could cause winds of 70MPH so seek shelter immediately indoors in Madisonville and Hopkinsville areas.

Strong Line of Showers With Wind

... Line of showers producing strong and gusty winds... A line of showers will move rapidly east across southwest Indianaand the pennyrile region of western Kentucky late this morning. These showers will produce strong winds... gusting up to 50 mph. The line of showers will reach a line from MorganfieldKentucky... .through Princeton Kentucky... to Cadiz... by around 1030am. The line will reach Evansville... Henderson... Madisonville... andHopkinsville by 11 am. Owensboro will be affected around 11 am.Strong wind gusts earlier this morning have brought some poweroutages to places where power was restored from the ice storm. Beprepared for a new round of hazards from these winds... includingfalling tree limbs... and debris or objects on roads.

Todays Outlook

Non Thunderstorm Winds Sustaned around 30 to 35MPH with gusts of 50 to 59MPH Expected today.

This will make Ice Storm Recovery very tough today. Even some power more outages are expected with this system.

Do not underestimate Non Thunderstorm Winds Today they will come down by Tonight with just 25 to 30mph gusts early Tomorrow.

A strongly forced and potenially intense squall line may or may not form from about 9am-1pm across West KY

Tuesday, February 10, 2009

High Wind Update

High Wind Warning for 3AM to 5pm for West KY.

This is an issue for Ice Storm Recovery for sure. Confidence Levels remain the same. Threats are Damaging Winds both Thunderstorm and Non Thunderstorm. And even locally heavy rain with ponding on the roads issues can't be ruled out.

Bad Hair Day Alert Tonight/Tomm.

As a very strong system moves from St Louis to Central Michigan at a fast pace areas of gradient winds will occur.

As far as how much instability and mixing can occur will depend on whether we are dealing with a 25 to 35mph sustained wind with 40 to 49mph gusts. Or whether we are dealing with 40 to 45mph sustained wind with gusts in excess of 58MPH+. With wind gusts at least 45MPH the impact for recovery of the ICE Storm in West KY is huge. Also weaker trees in Mid TN esp the Plateau will be at risk of getting blown down. Also mobile homes may be unsafe during this event and might get tipped over.

The wind will start to increase tonight esp. after midnight. The most intense gusts will be in West KY will be anywhere from a 1AM Wed Morning to 6PM Wednesday Evening time frame. Power Outages are possible across parts of the area of West KY and Mid TN but esp in West KY where there are weak limbs all over the place. There is a higher chance of the wind to blow down trees and limbs down on powerlines.

Also a squall line could form and produce enhanced corridors of Thunderstorm Wind Damage in excess of 70MPH. There is a chance that the line may struggle to get enough moisture and instability to become a widespread derecho. Also there is a chance that the line can line up with the intense pressure falls and weak tongue of 300 to 700 CAPE values and produce widespread wind damage across all of West KY and Mid TN Tomorrow Morning and Afternoon. It will all depend on moisture return, instability, and can the line of storms line up with the best dynamics.

A slight Risk exists from about Kentucky Lake to Marion Kentucky West. The main threat west of the lakes is tonight after midnight for hail and damaging winds from line segments or a squall line itself. East of the lakes is just rain thunderstorms and strong winds.

Winds will gust 45 to 50MPH after tonight and really start to pick up heading into tomorrow. In Which a high wind event is likely. Also the main squall line event is expected in which damaging winds in excess of 80MPH if bowing out occurs especially and even maybe an isolated tornado is possible/

Without thunderstorms sustained winds of 30 to 40MPH from the South and gusts up towards 60MPH can be expected without thunderstorms late tonight and during the day Wedensday before calming down Wed. Night and finally dieing out Thursday.

wind update

in West KY and Mid TN a high wind event is possible along with a squall line event. Wind gusts around 50mph and may even gust up to 60mph with just non thunderstorm winds is possible starting Later Tuesday though Wedensday and will cause harm to recovery of the ice storm. also a squall line/serial derecho could cause widespread 60-80mph winds if it can get going real good. May come close to 1/18/95 and 1/29/08 but with dryer pacfic air may save it from being that bad.

The tornado threat may not be that bad even though one in the line may form as discrete storms could get ripped apart.

Look into the Week

Sorry about the sloppiness due to the mouse wheel sticking. The confidence Level for the Wnd Advisory area today is 4. Those 4 Miss. River counties and PAH are under a wind advisory for today. The wind will pick up across West KY and Wind Advisory will be likely need for Tuesday and Wedensday for rest of West KY with 35 to 45mph wind gust maybe even near 50mph expected.

Severe storms are possible Tuesday Night and Wednesday. Damaging Winds are possible more details this afternoon.

Wet-Windy-Stormy Week ahead during recovery

There are still over 100,000 Kentucky families without power. Madisonville governor is using technology to communicate with those people who do not have power. There are several in shelters in many counties like Hopkins, Livingston, Crittenden, Carlisle, Ballard, McCracken, Webster, Henderson, Daviess, and Mclean and even several surrounding ones. Warm conditions are helping but the pattern coming up could bring a lot more harm to West Kentucky.

There are three threats coming to West Kentucky from Monday to Friday that need to be addressed.

1) Non Thunderstorm/Gradient Wind Event- Not another high wind event for West Kentucky. Boy have we had a lot of issues with these types of events. The IKE Wind Event, Jan 29th Wind Event, and May wind events and the list goes on. This event esp with a low in the 987-997mb range nearby in MO/IL and the strong 70 to 90mph aloft just above the surface has the potenial to produce wind gusts in the 40 to even 50 mph range. This will cause big time issues with loose limbs and to crews working on powerlines. To the point where being under a tree may put your life at risk because they are so many limbs from the ice storm and the wind events of 2008.

2) Severe Thunderstorm Wind Event- This is a big time concern esp. if we get enough instablity and moisture return. We can form a extensive and wicked squall line. This could tear down a lot of trees and powerhouse and cause structual damage. This could be a bad and dangerous situation. With all the forcing it wont take a lot of instablity to bring strong winds down in the form of thunderstorms.

3) Heavy Rain Event/River Flooding is possibity- This is a concern from Mon Night system, Tues-Wed System, and another system on Valentine's Day Weekend. We could see several inches of rain this week. The Tues-Wed system may drop several inches itself with soaking rain expected Mon Night and on Fri/Sat system. Even though we may only get 2 to 4 inches spread out over a week with debris in the rivers minor to moderate river flooding may be possible towards the weeks end. Any thunderstorm on Tuesday and Wedensday could also produce local ponding on the road problems in the heavier thunderstorms.

Ice Cleanup Short Update

Still several people without power in West Kentucky. Including towns like Clay, Marion, and small communities in the hardest hit rural counties. FEMA and National Guard are working hard.

Great news: A warmup that will take temps as high as near 70 tommrow will continue and continue for about a week. By that week a good deal should have power. If they don't they will at least know somewhere else to go to get power for when the cold air returns around Valentines Day.

Super Tuesday Outbreak 1 year ago from Tommorow.

A brief tornado map. Kinda hard to read. 1 year ago from Tomorrow Feb 5th a day that will live in the mind and heart of many featured a historic tornado outbreak. In West Kentucky all 5 tornadoes were caused by one tornadic supercell. It started in NW TN but then moved into SE Graves County than it moved into Calloway County. This is where it produced it's first tornado. An ef-1 tornado just west of the shore of Kentucky Lake that caused minor damage to the area. Then the tornado moved into North Trigg County and produced 2 tornadoes both Ef-1 Where spotters saw a tornado that passed just to north of Cadiz with minor damage near Lake Barkley Lodge from one Ef-1 tornado and North of Cadiz in the second Ef-1 tornado.

The second and most devastating string of tornadoes is in Christian and Muhelnberg Counties. The first tornado an upper end Ef-2 hit the Crofton area. Many homes were damaged and destroyed in this area and again in Muhlenberg County. Muhelnberg county is a county that got hit the hardest by tornadoes. An tornado started from west of Greenville than on the western side of Greenville caused sadly 3 deaths in West Kentucky in a Mobile home park. This tornado went though Powedery and Central City. Nearly missing a high school basketball game in Central City. In total over 21 millon dollars of damage occurred in Muhlenberg County and over 4 million in Christian County.

This was the first deadly tornado in west ky since Nov 2005. Prior to Nov 2005 the last deadly tornado occurred in March 1991.

Also featured West Kentucky's first ever high risk in February

INFO I POSTED ON WEATHER FORUMS

Super Tuesday Feb 5th. While people were voting in the primary elections and celebrating National Weatherperson Day a historic tornado outbreak struck in terms of deaths and time of year. Sadly up to 59 lost their lives in this high risk deadly outbreak.

The deadliest tornadoes were one right here in Mid TN as it hit Castalian Springs and Lafayette TN area. A miracle baby survived when she landed face down in the mud in Sumner county as the miracle baby made national news. As an Ef-3 tornado caused a path of destruction though the area. This tornado caused 22 direct deaths and 2 indirect and inspired a visit from George Bush the former president.

Also deadly tornadoes hit near the Memphis and Jackson TN areas. Union College was devastated but all students there survived. Also in West KY a deadly Ef-3 tornado caused over 21 million dollars of damages in Muhlenberg County and caused 3 fatal when it hit a mobile home park. All 7 deaths in Kentucky during Super Tuesday occurred in mobile homes during Super Tuesday.

A long tornado that traveled over 120 miles long occurred in Arkansas.

FEMA is helping in West KY so is National Guard

FEMA and National Guard have still setup areas in hard hit counties like Ballard, Livingston, Crittenden, and Fulton, Hickman, and Carlisle.

Most power has been restored in cities like Murray, Henderson, Owensboro, Fulton, Princeton, Madisonville. Towns like Marion and Livingston county are still without power but they do have water for the most part.

It can still could take weeks to get power back in very rural and hardest hit areas. As new powerlines and powerpoles will have to be set up and regridding of power systems must occur.

...COLD CONDITIONS WILL PERSIST TODAY AND TONIGHT...
...GUSTY WINDS WILL CONTINUE TO BE A PROBLEM INTO THE WEEKEND...

TEMPERATURES FROM 10 TO 15 DEGREES TO START THE DAY...COUPLED WITH
NORTHWEST WINDS SUSTAINED AROUND 10 MPH...WILL RESULT IN WIND
CHILLS NEAR ZERO OVER MOST AREAS THIS MORNING. HIGHS TODAY WILL
ONLY REACH THE UPPER TEENS TO MID 20S...WITH LOWS TONIGHT IN THE
SINGLE DIGITS TO MID TEENS.

THOSE STILL LIVING WITHOUT ADEQUATE HEAT SOURCES...SHOULD
STRONGLY CONSIDER RELOCATING TO A SAFE...WARM SHELTER FOR THE NEXT
FEW DAYS.

ALTHOUGH A WARMING TREND IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ACROSS THE REGION
THURSDAY...THE COMBINATION OF TEMPERATURES IN THE SINGLE DIGITS AND
TEENS...AND INCREASING SOUTHERLY WINDS WILL STILL RESULT IN
DANGEROUS WIND CHILLS...NEAR ZERO OR IN THE SINGLE DIGITS...FOR
MUCH OF THE MORNING THURSDAY.

ALTHOUGH WINDS TODAY WILL BE CONSIDERABLY WEAKER THAN
YESTERDAY...A FEW GUSTS UP TO 20 MPH WILL STILL BE POSSIBLE THIS
AFTERNOON MAINLY EAST OF THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER. AFTER A BRIEF CALM
PERIOD TONIGHT...GUSTY SOUTH WINDS WILL DEVELOP BY MIDDAY
THURSDAY. SOUTH WINDS FROM 10 TO 20 MPH WITH GUSTS 20 TO 30 MPH
THURSDAY AFTERNOON WILL ONCE AGAIN CREATE DIFFICULTIES FOR THOSE
ATTEMPTING TO RESTORE POWER TO THE REGION. THESE GUSTY SOUTH WINDS
WILL CONTINUE INTO FRIDAY AND THROUGH THE DAY SATURDAY.

Cold Nights

Brisk NW Winds and lows in the single digits could mean a dangerous situation for West KY esp. with people that do not have power due to last weeks ice storm. If you do not have power or any heating please take advantage of a shelter. Pretty Soon esp Friday a pretty intense warmup is possible with temperatures in the upper 50's and into the 60's possible.

First of Feb. Update

First after a warmup today and flurries tomm. and Tuesday a extended warmup lasting maybe up to 10 days is expected in West Kentucky.

This is great news for power restoration teams.

Updates: Several church services have cancelled services across West KY esp the more hard hit areas. Contact radio stations for more details to see if you have church services. Also national guard and spotters with emergency management are checking up on door to door services on people who don't have power.

In Livingston and Crittenden and rural areas water pressure is starting to come back. Although there is no power at least water will start to come back.

McCracken county have closed schools for tomorrow due to the recovery of the storm. More updates and updates from school
